West Covina’s Aaron Salgado had a 36 yard touchdown run in the third quarter<\/p><\/div>\n

(Covina) \u2013 DeShon Love rushed for\u00a0155 yards including a 78 yard touchdown and Aaron Salgado had a 36 yard TD jaunt to lead West Covina to a 34-0 shutout of Covina Friday night to open the 2012 season.<\/p>\n

Love, he had only seven carries, got the Bulldogs started on their first series when on the second play from scrimmage, he broke a couple of tackles and raced for a 78 yard touchown run for a 7-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Antonio \u201cNoodles\u201d Hull, who also started at quarterback, picked off Covina’s Darren Torrres on the subsequent series and returned it down to the nine. Two plays later Aaron Franklin scooted in from six yards out for a two touchdown lead.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the Covina offense was stuck in neutral. The Colts punted four times in the first half and turned the ball over on Hull’s interception on its other possession.<\/p>\n

Bulldog kicker Evan Hertenstein missed a 33 yard field goal attempt in the second quarter but West Covina cashed in again late in the second, piecing together a nine play, 60 yard drive for a 21-0 halftime advantage. Hull hit Ryan Crosby for an eight yard score to finish it.<\/p>\n

West Covina capped the scoring with a pair of touchdowns in the third.\u00a0Salgado, ran over the Covina defense for a 36 yard score and with 50 seconds left in the third and Bradley Ojala ran straight up the gut for a 26 yard touchdown romp.<\/p>\n

West Covina Coach Mike Maggiore emptied his bench in the fourth as the clock ran down. The defense did the rest as the Bulldogs rolled.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought our defense would be pretty good and they were,\u201d said West Covina Coach Mike Maggiore. \u201cWe have a couple of issues but we’ll get better.<\/p>\n

Defensively the Bulldogs were led by Justin Hornsby, and Ojala who constantly put pressure on Covina quarterbacks Torres and Emilo Vertuche.<\/p>\n

Salgado finished with 64 yards on eight carries including a 36 yard touchdown run and Ojala had four for 28 and a score.<\/p>\n

Hull rushed for a score and threw for a touchdown while accounting for over 100 yards.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe can do other things for us. Jon (Najera) won the job and when he’s completely healthy he’ll be the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was also impressed with Love.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’s really explosive, with Frazier and Solomon gone from last year’s team he is going to be the guy,\u201d Maggiore said.<\/p>\n

Covina, who was hit hard by graduation, managed just over 100 yards in total offense and turned the ball over three times. Crosby also intercepted a pass.<\/p>\n

Next week, West Covina hosts Loyola while Covina travels to La Puente.<\/p>\n
