{"id":26260,"date":"2012-09-01T04:21:12","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T11:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=26260"},"modified":"2017-06-10T10:17:34","modified_gmt":"2017-06-10T17:17:34","slug":"la-serna-28-downey-27-ot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=26260","title":{"rendered":"Stuff of Huff Gives La Serna OT Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Rich Whittington<\/p>\n<p>(Downey)- Downey\u2019s Sophomore running back Justin Huff came up just short on a two-point conversion attempt in overtime, allowing La Serna to secure a come from behind victory, 28-27, over host Downey Friday evening at Allen Layne Stadium.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Huff carried the ball 20 times for 118 yards, running with an ease not normally found in young backs.<\/p>\n<p>Downey controlled the tempo in the first two quarters, jumping out to a 10-0 halftime lead. The Vikings scored on a 6-yard touchdown run by dophomore quarterback Jorge Reyna at the 11:57 mark in the second quarter. The PAT was added by senior Mario Galvin.\u00a0 Galvin added a 29 yard field goal with 3:34 remaining in the half.<\/p>\n<p>Galvin added another field goal, this one from 30 yards to start the second half.<\/p>\n<p>La Serna got on the board with a 17-yard touchdown run by senior running back Luke Gonzales with 6:49 to play in the third quarter. The PAT attempt by senior kicker<\/p>\n<p>Tavis Guerra was good, making the score 13-7, Downey.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikes opened the fourth quarter with a 17-yard scoring toss from Reyna to senior wide out Justin Duran. This was followed by a two-point conversion toss from Reyna to junior running back Eric Carrillo, stretching Downey\u2019s lead to 21-7, with 11:55 remaining in the game.<\/p>\n<p>La Serna evened the score with a pair of touchdown runs by senior Ryan Cordova. The first was a 1-yard plunge with 6:49 remaining in regulation. The second came with 2:07 left in the game. Guerra was good on both PAT attempts, which tied the game at 21-21.<\/p>\n<p>Downey had one last shot at winning the game in regulation. With :08 left on the clock, Galvin\u2019s field goal attempt of 35-yards came up just short. La Serna chose to let the final ticks run off of the clock, forcing an overtime period.<\/p>\n<p>La Serna won the overtime coin flip, and chose to have the first overtime possession. The Lancers scored on an 18-yard run by quarterback Frankie Palmer. Guerra\u2019s PAT was good, giving La Serna the lead, 28-20.<\/p>\n<p>Downey answered with a touchdown run of their own, a 1-yard shot by senior running back Matthew Gonzalez. That made the score 28-27. Downey opted to go for two, Huff was stoff and the rest, as they say, is history,<\/p>\n<p>Next week, La Serna will host the Bonita Bearcats, while Downey will travel to Schurr to do battle with the Spartans.
