{"id":26264,"date":"2012-09-01T04:30:18","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T11:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=26264"},"modified":"2017-06-10T10:54:47","modified_gmt":"2017-06-10T17:54:47","slug":"south-el-monte-19-nogales-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=26264","title":{"rendered":"South Grinds Out a Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_26337\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26337\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26337\" title=\"8-31-12 SEM-NOG 006\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/8-31-12-SEM-NOG-006-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leo Artiaga rushed for over 90 yards and scored a touchdown.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>(La Puente) &#8211; South El Monte&#8217;s defense\u00a0forced\u00a0five turnovers and\u00a0Leo Artiaga rushed\u00a0for 91 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles beat\u00a0Nogales 19-6 Friday night to open the season.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Javier Machua\u00a0filled in at quarterback as Fernando Ramirez was in street clothes with an injured knee and backup Levi Wells won&#8217;t be eligible until October 1 under the 30 day transfer rule.<\/p>\n<p>Machuca kept the ball on the the ground for the most part handing off to Artiaga\u00a027 times and running it 11 times himself.\u00a0Machuca had 40 yards rushing\u00a0and when he did go to the air,\u00a0completed nine of 15\u00a0for 107 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>After a scoreless first quarter , South took advantage\u00a0of a Nogales turnover when\u00a0Machuca hit\u00a0Erick Zelaya for a\u00a015 yard score\u00a0with 8:11 left in the second. Later in the quarter, Machuca hit Zelaya for a 43 yard pass play\u00a0to set up a 30 yard field goal by Augustin Pinto just before the half for\u00a0a 10-0 lead at the break.<\/p>\n<p>Neither team scored in the third and\u00a0early in the fourth,\u00a0the Eagles began to call Artiaga&#8217;s number.\u00a0He carried the ball ten consecutive times and eventually punched it into the end zone for\u00a0a one-yard score to break the Nobles spirit.\u00a0The drive consisted of runs of\u00a022, 14,8, and 8 yards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of our guys were playing with the first game jitters I think, said South El Monte Coach Ibis\u00a0Aguilar. &#8220;Leo\u00a0definitley started playing his game\u00a0and our offense really started rolling there in the fourth quarter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nogales finally got on the board\u00a0later in the final period when Antoise Fields\u00a0got loose for\u00a0a 38 yard touchdown run. Nogales got the ball back\u00a0but was forced to\u00a0punt and\u00a0a bad snap sailed out of the endzone resulting in a safety and two points for the Eagles.<\/p>\n<p>South El Monte intercepted\u00a0Nogales quarterback Gabriel Ayala three times and also caused\u00a0a pair of fumbles.\u00a0Eric Garcia, Pablo Ocegueda and Aaron Saavedra all had picks\u00a0and Ismael Gutierrez had a fumble recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u00a0did a good job defensively on them but they never stopped. We\u00a0got a lot of outside pressure on them\u00a0on their one touchdown and they called a draw. It was a good offensive call,&#8221; Aguilar said.<\/p>\n<p>Next week\u00a0the Eagles are home against Montebello\u00a0while Nogales (0-2) will hit the road to play Ontario.
