Off the Crossbar: College Soccer \u2013 Week in Review<\/p>\n

As Division I and NAIA teams are still playing non-conference match-ups, our local teams are logging miles and testing their talent in interesting and exciting games. On the other hand, Division II has been in full swing playing conference foes. These were last week\u2019s games:<\/p>\n

TUESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cal State LA 1 \u2013 Cal State Dominguez Hills 2 (2OT)<\/span><\/p>\n

The top ranked Golden Eagles traveled to Cal State Dominguez Hills for a CCAA showdown ending in a 1-1 draw. Cal State LA\u2019s Federico Cino tied the game in the 54th<\/sup> minute after Dominguez Hills took the lead in the 7th<\/sup> minute with an Andrew Martinez goal.<\/p>\n

THURSDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

UCLA 4 \u2013 UC Davis 0<\/span><\/p>\n

UCLA manhandled UC Davis with a 4-0 shutout at home. Kyle Nakazawa started it for the Bruins when his 3rd<\/sup> minute shot found the top of net for the only first half goal. In the 59th<\/sup> Chandler Hoffman buried a close range shot to double the lead and would add another goal in the 69th<\/sup> minute after spinning his defender and firing from 10 yards, making it 3-0. Evan Rayner topped the quartet with a 15 yard blast in the 72nd<\/sup> minute<\/p>\n

FRIDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

#9 UC Irvine 2 \u2013 DePaul 3<\/span><\/p>\n

UC Irvine traveled to Wisconsin for the Marquette Invitational but didn\u2019t start out right as DePaul stunned the Anteaters with three unanswered goals.<\/p>\n

Things started positive for Irvine when 10 minutes in Carlos Aguilar gave his team the 1-0 lead. Amani Walker would double it in the 30th<\/sup> minute converting his penalty kick. But the wheels started to fall for Irvine when two minutes into the second half DePaul\u2019s Steffen Vroom beat the Anteater keeper to cut the lead, 2-1. In the 52nd<\/sup> minute Willy Lara pounced on a deflection to bring the score even at 2-2. Six minutes later Matt Leinauer slotted home the game-winner for DePaul, capping the 3-2 comeback.<\/p>\n

Cal State Fullerton 2 \u2013 Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1<\/span><\/p>\n

Cal State Fullerton didn\u2019t travel far for their weekend\u2019s matches, playing at the Cal State Northridge\u2019s Tournament. They defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in their first game.<\/p>\n

Titan\u2019s Michael Deny elevated Fullerton to the win with his 75th<\/sup> minute goal but most of the action was in the first half. Fullerton took the 1-0 lead in the 34th<\/sup> minute when Nick Posthuma tapped the ball in from inside the 6-yard box. Three minutes later Milwaukee\u2019s Cody Banks was at the end of a give-and-go for the 1-1 equalizer. The second half was all Titan offense, outshooting Milwaukee 13-5 with 5 hitting the frame, including Deny\u2019s game winner.<\/p>\n

Cal State Northridge 2 \u2013 Fairleigh-Dickinson 0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cal State Northridge managed to shutout Fairleigh-Dickinson in game one of their tournament. After a scoreless half, Northridge made it 1-0 in the 65th<\/sup> minute with Cameron Sims\u2019 header off a corner kick. With eight minutes left in regulation Robert Pate placed the ball through traffic and into the back of the net for the 2-0 final.<\/p>\n

UC Riverside 3 \u2013 Cal State Bakersfield 2<\/span><\/p>\n

In a rough and tumble shootout, UC Riverside gave up the lead twice and fell to host Cal State Bakersfield.<\/p>\n

In the 25th<\/sup> minute Robert Cate headed in the night\u2019s first goal, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead going into halftime. Alberto Navarro\u2019s 64th<\/sup> minute penalty kick equalized the game before Riverside regained the lead, 2-1, three minutes later with a Joel Garcia strike. In the 82nd<\/sup> minute Evan Fassler\u2019s shot found the back of the net tying the game and Bakersfield never looked back. Three minutes later Justin Finch tallied the game\u2019s final and deciding goal for Cal State Bakersfield.<\/p>\n

Overshadowing the five goals were the eight yellow cards handed out. Bakersfield received two while Riverside was given five, including a red card to Azeez Atanda in the 64th<\/sup> minute following his second yellow card of the game.<\/p>\n

LMU 1 \u2013 San Jose State 0<\/span><\/p>\n

A 51st<\/sup> minute goal is all Loyola Marymount needed to defeat visiting San Jose State. Chris Bernardi scored the lone goal for the Lions from inside the 6 yard box off Vincent Ocampo\u2019s cross. It was a close game as San Jose edged out LMU on shots, 17-13, but only saw 4 get on goal<\/p>\n

#5 Cal State LA 2 \u2013 Cal Poly Pomona 1<\/span><\/p>\n

Host Cal State LA scored in each half to defeat Cal Poly Pomona. Golden Eagle Jason Swope combined with Federico Cino in the 21st<\/sup> and 53rd<\/sup> minute to notch both goals. Kevin Ramirez cut the lead in half for Pomona in the 79th<\/sup> minute, but wasn\u2019t enough to swing momentum to the Bronco\u2019s side. Earlier in the 26th<\/sup> minute, Pomona\u2019s Marc Glogowsky was ejected for an intentional handball inside the 18 yard box, but LA\u2019s penalty kick clinked off the post.<\/p>\n

Cal State Dominguez Hills 0 \u2013 Cal State San Bernardino 1<\/span><\/p>\n

Cal State Dominguez Hills haven\u2019t found their rhythm as they dropped another game. It was a tight contest, but in the 73rd<\/sup> minute Albert Cabrera drilled one of his two shots, giving San Bernardino the deciding 1-0 lead. The Toros outshot their opponents 16-12 but weren\u2019t able to find the back of the net.<\/p>\n

#5 Azusa Pacific 2 \u2013 #3 Notre Dame (Oh) 1<\/span><\/p>\n

Azusa traveled to the University of Mobile in Alabama for the Kick-Off Classic facing Notre Dame (Ohio).<\/p>\n

The Cougars defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) with a late Brett Taylor goal. Azusa took the early lead in the 14th<\/sup> minute with Vini Dantas\u2019 penalty kick following Notre Dame\u2019s handball inside the 18-yard box. Less than five minutes in the second half, the Falcons tied the game with Ash Young\u2019s rebound shot from 12 yards. But in the 79th<\/sup> minute, Taylor beat the Falcon back line to a cross he buried for the game winning goal.<\/p>\n

SATURDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

#5 Azusa Pacific 6 \u2013 University of Mobile 0<\/span><\/p>\n

Azusa scored twice in the first half and added four more in the second to shutout Mobile in Mobile\u2019s Kick-Off Classic.<\/p>\n

Reid Baker and Brett Taylor each scored in the first half for the Cougars 2-0 lead. In The 58th<\/sup> minute Cito Soriano added a third goal. Mike Wilson, Michael Sahagian, and Sam Sprauer converted the last three goals in the last 15 minutes of regulation.<\/p>\n

SUNDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

#9 UC Irvine 1 \u2013 Marquette 0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Thomas Spencer goal is all Irvine needed to put away the host team in the final day of the Marquette Invitational. After posting doughnuts in the first half, Spencer beat his defender in the 57th<\/sup> minute and took a shot a shot to the left corner past the arms of the Marquette keeper.<\/p>\n

UC Riverside 2 \u2013 San Jose State 1<\/span><\/p>\n

San Jose was the first team of the season to fall to the Highlanders. In the 12th<\/sup> minute Riverside\u2019s Normando Mariscal place a header on goal for the 1-0 lead. In the 20th<\/sup> minute, Tyler Wilson made it 2-0 as he found the back of the net. The Spartans would make it exciting; in the 30th<\/sup> minute Oscar Yniguez cut the deficit for San Jose, 2-1. The Riverside defense would stay tight through a scoreless second half and hold on to win their first game of the season.<\/p>\n

Cal State Fullerton 3 \u2013 Fairleigh-Dickinson 0<\/span><\/p>\n

This Week in College Soccer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Several teams travel out of state to continue tournament play. Cal State Northridge has an interesting matchup with Tulsa and tourney host Southern Methodist University, always tough schools to play. But watch out for UC Riverside vs Illinois-Chicago as a win by Riverside could give the Highlanders the confidence to turnaround a bad early season.<\/p>\n
