Terrell Watson started the scoring with a 13 yard touchdown run with 8:47 left in the third quarter\u00a0and Tyler Thornton finished it with a 99 yard return of an interception in the fourth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->It was the defense however that was the story as\u00a0the Cougars\u00a0shut out\u00a0the Lumberjack offense. Three times they stonewalled Humboldt State in the red zone once causing a fumble at the goal line\u00a0and recovering the ball\u00a0to prevent a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>Justin McPherson started at quarterback for the Cougars and completed six of 12 passes for 37 yards.\u00a0It was APU&#8217;s running attack that\u00a0did in\u00a0Humboldt. Watson finished with 159 yards and\u00a0two touchdowns on 31 carries.\u00a0Ronald Douglas had a 54-yard TD romp in the third and rushed for 70 yards.\u00a0Azusa Pacific had 253 yards on the ground on the night.<\/p>\n<p>***Cougars prevent the Lumberjacks\u00a0from scoring with goal line stand at start of second quarter. Sophomore linebacker Matthew Hackett makes key stop on fourth down.<\/p>\n<p>***Last week&#8217;s starting quarterback for APU Nick Owens did not play.<\/p>\n<p>***With the edition of its new white helmet, APU now has up to 18 different color combinations<\/p>\n<p>***Terrell Watson trucked Humboldt free safety Eric Paopao on a second down at the APU 41 late in the second quarter that blew up the stadium and the Cougar sideline.<\/p>\n<p>***In the\u00a0scoreless first half, Humboldt had 7 first downs, APU 6. Rushing yards: Humboldt 92, APU 91.<\/p>\n<p>***0:15 to play in the third quarter Humboldt&#8217;s Nick Ricciardulli coughs up the ball and Cougar linebacker Sean Barber recovers at the Jacks 28.<\/p>\n<p>***APU&#8217;s\u00a0Watson also scored on a one-yard\u00a0run with 12:22 to play in the fourth for his second touchdown of the night.<\/p>\n<p>***Humboldt State turned the ball over on downs with 9:54 to play in the fourth at the APU 14. Jacks quarterback Kyle Morris&#8217; pass is broken up in the end zone by David Smith and Tyler Thornton.<\/p>\n<p>***On the goal line fumble,\u00a0Jacks quarterback Kyle Morris completed a pass to Chase Krivashei but he was stripped at the goal line by\u00a0Thornton and linebacker Sean Barber recovered at the one for APU with 6:00 to play.<\/p>\n<p>***Watson was tackled in the end zone for a safety in the fourth for Humboldt State&#8217;s only points of the night.<\/p>\n<p>***Thornton&#8217;s pick six is the first for APU since October 30th, 2010 when Jay York returned an interception 43-yards against Southern Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>***Humboldt State started on the offensive line: LT: Lucas Govan. LG: Jonathan Bajet. C: David Kulp. RG: Dillon Reagan. RT: Jarrett Adams.<\/p>\n<p>***APU started on the offensive line: LT: Paul Flores. LG: Jordan Wernet. C: Lance Barker. RG: Ahmad Sunda. RT: Cody Clay.<\/p>\n<p>***The victory improved APU HC Victor Santa Cruz&#8217;s record to 35-43 overall. Santa Cruz&#8217;s in his eighth at Azusa.\u00a0 Humboldt State HC Rob Smith is now 31-24 overall in his sixth year with the program.<\/p>\n<p>***The win was APU&#8217;s\u00a0first over Humboldt state since\u00a02007 when the Cougars beat the Lumberjacks on the road 27-17.<\/p>\n<p>***Next week Humboldt hosts Dixie State in Arcata, California.
