(Anaheim) – The LA KISS gave up the last 14 points\u00a0of the game and fell to Cleveland 40-30 in a see-saw battle\u00a0Saturday night at Honda Center. The KISS led 30-26 late in the third quarter but never scored again despite\u00a0having a golden opportunity in the fourth quarter.\u00a0Meanwhile the Gladiators came up with two big\u00a0plays to finish it off.<\/p>\n

Down by four Shane Austin\u00a0hit Thyron Lewis for a 25 yard score to give the Gladiators a 33-30 lead.\u00a0The KISS had responded all evening and expected to again when they drove down to the Cleveland five yard line. But the Gladiator front\u00a0stuffed the KISS on four straight plays on the ground.\u00a0KISS\u00a0quarterback JJ Raterink was stopped on a keeper\u00a0from the one yard line on fourth down giving Cleveland the ball back and with just over five minutes left that was the\u00a0ball game.<\/p>\n

“No\u00a0matter\u00a0what level of football you’re playing\u00a0you have to get in from there,” Raterink said. “We’ll have something better next time.”<\/p>\n

“We were able to run the ball pretty well before.\u00a0We have a good offensive line and we felt we could punch it in,” said KISS Coach\u00a0Bob McMillen. “We didn’t and that hurt us. We’ll need to look at the film and see what happened.”<\/p>\n

There were eight lead changes in all before Cleveland took control in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Cleveland scored first on a on a five yard pass from Austin to Dominick Goodman in the first quarter but the extra point was missed. The KISS responded\u00a0with a 45 yard TD strike from Raterink to Donovan Morgan to take a 7-6 lead.<\/p>\n

Austin hit\u00a0Lewis\u00a0on a 11-yard scoring toss early in the second quarter and\u00a0the\u00a0Gladiators jumped back in front. The extra point was blocked by the KISS.\u00a0KISS DB Dextor\u00a0McCoil is ejected when he threw\u00a0a closed fist punch during an altercation after the kick was blocked.<\/p>\n

On the next possession Raterink found Markee White in the back end of the zone on a four-yard pass and the KISS went\u00a0back on top 14-12.<\/p>\n

Gladiator offensive lineman Corey Howard rumbled in eight yards for a score\u00a0and Cleveland regained the advantage\u00a019-14.<\/p>\n

KISS kicker Kenny Spencer booted a 36-yard field goal to cut the Gladiator lead to 19-17 to close out the first half.<\/p>\n

On the first drive of the second half\u00a0the KISS drive was culminated with a\u00a0ten-yard pass from Raterink to\u00a0Morgan. The PAT was\u00a0missed.<\/p>\n

On the ensuing\u00a0possession Austin hit Tyone Collins with a four yard TD pass and the Glads grabbed\u00a0the lead.<\/p>\n

A long kick\u00a0off return set up a nine-yard touchdown pass from Raterink to Samie Parker and the KISS\u00a0jumped ahead\u00a0again\u00a0at 30-26. Then the Gladiators took control.<\/p>\n

Cleveland immediately answered with a 35-yard pass to a streaking Lewis\u00a0for another score and a 33-30\u00a0lead.<\/p>\n

The KISS is then stopped on the goal line\u00a0and\u00a0Austin and Lewis promptly hook up\u00a0again\u00a0for a 25-yard score to go up\u00a040-30.<\/p>\n

The KISS was halted\u00a0again for the second straight time on downs and Cleveland\u00a0ate up the rest of the\u00a0clock.<\/p>\n

Raterink completed 23 of 41 for 259 yards and four touchdowns\u00a0for the KISS while Morgan caught seven passes for 115 yards\u00a0and two scores.\u00a0For Cleveland Austin was\u00a021 of 37 for 243 yards and\u00a0five scores. Lewis\u00a0was his main target hauling in three touchdown passes for 76 yards. Goodman had nine catches for 77 yards and a score.<\/p>\n

Cleveland improved to 4-0 while the KISS dropped to .500\u00a0at 2-2.<\/p>\n

“I told the team there’s no reason to panic.\u00a0We’ll get it fixed.\u00a0We have 14 games left,” McMillen said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
