Points awarded on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis).<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>By Bob Guptil, GNAC Sports<br \/>\n(PORTLAND, Ore.) &#8211; Azusa Pacific is the pre-season pick to repeat as Great Northwest Athletic Conference football champions.\u00a0The Cougars are also ranked 22nd in the inaugural AFCA Division II Top 25 national poll.<\/p>\n<p>APU, which opens its season Thursday, Sept. 4 at home against Grand Valley State (Mich.) in a CBS Sports Network televised game, received the maximum of six first-place votes in the GNAC Coaches pre-season poll.\u00a0 Coaches were not allowed to vote for their team in the poll.<\/p>\n<p>Kickoff for the TV game is at 6 p.m. Pacific.\u00a0 Grand Valley State is ranked second in the AFCA national poll in back of top-ranked Northwest Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>APU won the GNAC championship last year posting a 9-1 conference record.\u00a0 The Cougars finished their season with a 10-2 overall record.<\/p>\n<p>Among seven returning starters on offense for the Cougars is running back Terrell Watson, who set a GNAC single-season record rushing for 1,812 yards and 23 touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>Central Washington, which has won seven GNAC football titles in the 11-year history of the football league, finished second in the pre-season poll one point ahead of third-place Western Oregon, which received one first-place vote.<\/p>\n<p>Humboldt State, the 2011 GNAC champions,\u00a0placed fourth in the poll.\u00a0 Simon Fraser, Dixie State and South Dakota Mines earned fifth, sixth and seventh place rankings.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota Mines is a first-year member of the GNAC for football.\u00a0 The Hardrockers will play this season and the 2015 season in the GNAC before moving into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the 2016 season.<\/p>\n<p>The Grand Valley State-Azusa Pacific game is one of seven games in the opening week, including six on Saturday, Sept. 6.<br \/>\nCentral Washington will travel to Missoula, Mont., to take on the University of Montana.\u00a0 Western Oregon, meanwhile,\u00a0will play at Portland State.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Dixie State will play at Colorado Mesa, Humboldt State visits Texas A&amp;M\u00a0&#8211; Kingsville, Menlo visits Simon Fraser and Colorado Mines will play at South Dakota Mines.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the seven GNAC teams will play a single round-robin six-game conference schedule.\u00a0 In addition, everyone except South Dakota Mines will play three non-conference games against GNAC opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The first conference counting game will be Sept. 27 when Simon Fraser and Central Washington play at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell, Wash., in the first \u201cBattle for the Border\u201d game, presented by the Washington National Guard.<br \/>\n***<br \/>\n<strong>NorRockians Getting Ready For Saturday<\/strong><br \/>\nThe shots below are of Penny brothers, Rashad &amp; Elijah, doing work for their schools.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40467\" style=\"width: 443px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rashaad-Penny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40467\" class=\" wp-image-40467\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Rashaad-Penny-785x768.jpg\" alt=\"Rashaad Penny at San Diego State\" width=\"433\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40467\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rashaad Penny at San Diego State<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_40468\" style=\"width: 453px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Elijah-Penny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40468\" class=\" wp-image-40468\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Elijah-Penny-788x768.jpg\" alt=\"Elijah Penny at Idaho\" width=\"443\" height=\"430\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elijah Penny at Idaho<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Great Northwest Coaches Poll: 2013 Records\/Pts 1.
