(Glendora) –\u00a0Humboldt State\u00a0jumped out to a 35-6 halftime lead and\u00a0never looked back in a 62-41 rout of Azusa Pacific Saturday night in the Cougars home opener at Citrus College.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Azusa Pacific did outscore Humboldt\u00a0State 35-20 in the second half\u00a0it was too much of\u00a0a hole to dig out of.<\/p>\n

The Lumberjacks racked up\u00a0526 yards of total offense. La’Quan Gardner rushed for\u00a0225 yards and three touchdowns with along of 51 yards.\u00a0Robert Webber,\u00a0only a sophomore,\u00a0completed\u00a013-16 for 220 yards and five scores with no interceptions. Chase Krivashei caught seven passes for 84 yards and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n

Kurt Scoby, a redshirt freshman,\u00a0scored twice for the Cougars while running for 56 yards and Chad Jeffries was 22 of 35 for 319 yards and a pair of touchdowns\u00a0and a pick, but it wasn’t nearly enough.<\/p>\n

Webber connected with Krivashei for the first score on a 16-yard pass on the first possession of the game.<\/p>\n

The Lumberjacks take advantage of a short punt by APU and\u00a0marched 47 yards for the score. Sage Burmeister crossed the goal\u00a0line on a\u00a0seven-yard run at the 1:06 mark of the first to put\u00a0Humboldt Sate\u00a0up 14-0. The Cougars\u00a0struggled on offense\u00a0on their first two possessions and were down 14 after one.<\/p>\n

APU again was\u00a0forced to punt and the Lumberjacks capitalized. Gardner looked like he was stopped in a pile but broke\u00a0out of the scrum and rumbled 22 yards around the far side for a touchdown as\u00a0Humboldt State goes up\u00a021-0 with 13:40 left in the second.<\/p>\n

Scoby erased the zero for the\u00a0Cougars as he\u00a0finished a drive\u00a0with a nine-yard run\u00a0to make it 21-6, but typical of the Cougars’ night, the\u00a0extra point was blocked.<\/p>\n

Gardner got loose again\u00a0on the following series.\u00a0This time he hit the corner\u00a0and went\u00a051 yards for the score and the Lumberjacks were cruising 28-6.<\/p>\n

APU went\u00a0three and out and again Humboldt State cashed in. Webber found\u00a0Krivashei\u00a0for a nine yard\u00a0score for a 35-6 Lumberjack lead heading into halftime.<\/p>\n

Gardner\u00a0had\u00a0139 yards and two touchdowns\u00a0on the ground in the first two quarters while\u00a0Webber threw for\u00a0122 yards and a pair of scores.<\/p>\n

Gardner picked up right where he left off\u00a0busting off a 46-yard run down to the Cougar 15.\u00a0From there Richard Doctor\u00a0made a house call with a nine-yard touchdown run to make it 42-6.<\/p>\n

Jeffries’ pass\u00a0was\u00a0batted in the air and picked off on the next\u00a0possession\u00a0just like that\u00a0Gardner got his\u00a0third score of the night on an eight-yard run with\u00a09:39 left in the third quarter and at 49-6 it was game, set match.<\/p>\n

The Cougars showed some signs of life with two straight touchdowns. Jeffries\u00a0set up a\u00a0score with a big throw\u00a0to Blake\u00a0Robertson and then capped it\u00a0with a four-yard run to make it 49-13.<\/p>\n

On the next possession,\u00a0Jeffries hit Robertson over the middle for\u00a0a 52-yard gain down to the Lumberjack 10.\u00a0On a fourth and goal at the three, Ryan Adams took a hand off from Andrew Elffers and bulled his way to six points.<\/p>\n

The Cougars allowed two touchdowns on fourth down conversions as\u00a0Webber hit\u00a0Burmeister behind the\u00a0Cougar secondary for a 30-yard TD strike and late in the fourth he hit Krivashei with a 31-yard bullet for a touchdown.<\/p>\n

Jeffries hit Grant Widmar on\u00a0a ten-yard touchdown pass and Scoby got his second of the night\u00a0in the fourth.\u00a0Jeffries\u00a0tossed one to\u00a0Ethan Zeidler on a four-yard touchdown with three seconds left to round out the scoring.<\/p>\n

“It was a choppy first half that put us in too much of a hole,” said Azusa Pacific Coach\u00a0Victor Santa Cruz. “We couldn’t get out of second and third gear. Then when we did we had some penalties that hurt us.”<\/p>\n

The two teams will meet again October 10 at Humboldt State. Azusa Pacific fell to 1-1 while Humboldt State improved to 2-0.<\/p>\n

Next up for the Cougars is a trip to Canada to play Simon Fraser next Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
