We\u2019re getting some guys back from injury so its really good to see the chemistry happening there,\u201d said Azusa Pacific Coach Victor Santa Cruz. \u201cThe new guys aren\u2019t new anymore and they\u2019re getting the system figured out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Azusa\u00a0Pacific scored first on a four-yard run by Andrew Elffers.\u00a0APU\u00a0put together a drive after stopping\u00a0South Dakota Mines on fourth down.<\/p>\n<p>On the next possession, the defense made its mark as\u00a0Taliuaki Suliafu\u00a0blocked a punt\u00a0and Aaron Berry\u00a0scooped it up and\u00a0rumbled 19 yards into the end zone to give the Cougars a 14-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota Mines responded\u00a0as Anthony Wright went\u00a0three yards for a score to get the Hardrockers\u00a0on the board and cut the APU advantage\u00a0to 14-7.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50418\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?attachment_id=50418\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-50418\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50418\" class=\"wp-image-50418 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/apu-defense-608x768.jpg\" alt=\"apu defense\" width=\"520\" height=\"657\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APU gets defensive with South Dakota Mines<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Elffers fired his first TD of the night on the next series with a 31-yard bullet\u00a0for a\u00a0touchdown\u00a0to Blake Robertson. The score was set up by a 68-yard run by\u00a0Scoby.<\/p>\n<p>Elffers gave the coaching staff a heart attack on his next touchdown as he went up and\u00a0over the top of a defender and into the end zone for a four-yard score.\u00a0He took off from the two yard line and landed across the goal line.\u00a0Scoby set up the score with a 30-yard run as the Cougars went up 28-7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a college quarterback\u2019s dream right there. I was just trying to get in the end zone,\u201d Elffers said.<\/p>\n<p>The Hardrockers took\u00a0advantage of a Fanula fumble\u00a0and cashed it on for a touchdown. Devin Nixon capped\u00a0a drive with a five-yard run to slice the APU lead to 28-14.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars had one more strike left before halftime.\u00a0Elffers threw his\u00a0second touchdown of the night \u2013 a 57 yard strike to Ethan Zeidler with 1:31 left in the first half to increase the Cougs margin to 35-14.<\/p>\n<p>The Hardrockers attempted a\u00a0fake field goal at the end of the half\u00a0but it failed\u00a0as quarterback Trent McKinney was\u00a0tackled for a loss.<\/p>\n<p>Scoby already had\u00a0133 yards at the break and Elffers has thrown\u00a0for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota Mines tried to keep pace with a score on the\u00a0first drive of the second half when\u00a0McKinney kept\u00a0the ball and scored on a six-yard run, but the Cougars scored on the next three drives to put the game away.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Fanua\u00a0found pay dirt\u00a0on a six-yard run\u00a0and Elffers snuck in from the one on the following series to open the fourth quarter make it\u00a049-21. On the drive Scoby\u00a0surpassed the\u00a01000 yard mark on the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProducing a 1000 yard rusher\u00a0is outstanding. We love running the ball here and tonight we saw how with the spread\u00a0offense we create a lot of holes for the running game,\u201d Santa Cruz said.<\/p>\n<p>Fanua later got his second\u00a0of the night for the final Cougars score.<\/p>\n<p>Jake Sullivan, who replaced McKinney at\u00a0quarterback, rushed for a late TD for the Hardrockers for the final score of the night.<\/p>\n<p>With the win Azusa Pacific improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the GNAC.
