The La Mirada Matadores are Southeast Champs<\/p><\/div>\n

(La Mirada) – The last few years\u00a0have ended in disappointment for La Mirada. Last year’s first round playoff loss to Salesian especially left a bad taste in their mouths.\u00a0This year the Matadores made sure that didn’t happen\u00a0with a convincing\u00a045-20 win over La Serna Saturday night to capture the Southeast Division title.<\/p>\n

Sei-j Lauago\u00a0had a field day, or night\u00a0in this\u00a0case, for the Mats rushing for\u00a0292 yards and three touchdowns.\u00a0he busted off scoring runs of\u00a062, 66 and three yards and\u00a0also broke loose for\u00a0a 67 yard run\u00a0in the third quarter to set up his three-yard TD run.<\/p>\n

La Serna hung around in the first half. The Lancers scored first\u00a0on their second possession of the game\u00a0going 51\u00a0yards\u00a0on just three\u00a0plays with quarterback Johnny Ceballos\u00a0capping it with a seven-yard run. Ceballos hit Daniel Campos for\u00a037 yards to set up the score.<\/p>\n

Sei-j Lauago rushed for 292 yards and three touchdowns o lead La Mirada to the Southeast title<\/p><\/div>\n

The Mats responded by reeling off the next three touchdowns\u00a0to go up 21-7. Sei-j Lauago\u00a0went 62 yards later in the first to give La Mirada\u00a0 a 14-7 lead\u00a0and he did it again to open the third for a 21-7 lead. La Serna however wasn’t going to fold. Ceballos\u00a0scored on runs of one and three yards to get the Lancers within four at the half.<\/p>\n

La Mirada then\u00a0scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to put the Lancers on ice.<\/p>\n

***\u00a0La Serna scored with no time remaining on the clock in the first half to cut the La Mirada lead to 24-20. The touchdown was set up when\u00a0La Mirada quarterback\u00a0Tristan Meyer was picked off by\u00a0Anthony Garcia to put\u00a0the Lancers\u00a0at the Matadore 41. Ceballos hit Campos for 27 yards to set up the score.<\/p>\n

***\u00a0The Matadores scored just\u00a031 seconds into the second half on two Lauago runs. On the first play from scrimmage he went 67 yards down to the La Serna three-yard line and\u00a0crashed in from\u00a0there on the next play from scrimmage.<\/p>\n

*** La Mirada was forced to punt\u00a0on the next series but\u00a0on the ensuing possession,\u00a0Ceballos was picked off by\u00a0Chase Newman who returned it 12 yards\u00a0for the pick\u00a0six and just like that it was 38-20.<\/p>\n

*** In the fourth quarter\u00a0Nick Hernandez\u00a0found a hole and ran 52 yards for a touchdown for a\u00a045-20 lead which proved to be the dagger with\u00a08:42 left.<\/p>\n

*** La Serna turned the ball over three times – all interceptions. Shawn Swayne picked off a pass in the first half and\u00a0Elijah Hicks\u00a0intercepted Ceballos in the end zone on the Lancers’ last play. La Mirada turned it over twice.<\/p>\n

***\u00a0Meyer rushed for a touchdown and threw for\u00a091 yards completing 8 of 16 with an interception.<\/p>\n

*** La Mirada had\u00a0403 yards rushing overall on the\u00a0night with Hernandez\u00a0picking up 111 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.<\/p>\n

*** Garcia led the La Serna rushing attack with\u00a017 carries for 83 yards. Ceballos threw for 111 yards but was hurt by the three picks.\u00a0He rushed for\u00a063 yards and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n

***\u00a0La Serna’s four second half possessions\u00a0ended in a blocked field goal, interception for a pick-six,\u00a0fourth down stop, interception.<\/p>\n

*** La Serna finished\u00a0the\u00a0season\u00a011-3 overall and won the Del Rio League title. La Mirada was also\u00a011-3 but finished the year with a 10 game winning streak.<\/p>\n
