(Opening remarks)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWell you can see how fast the days go by, and the weeks go by in our business. Really good day today. We backed down a little bit, just because of what we went through Sunday late afternoon. Players are off tomorrow. We\u2019ll see most of them, and we\u2019ll finish up strong on Friday. We\u2019ve got a great opponent, very well-coached team, all three phases. We know each other very well. It\u2019s going to come down to making some plays. The plan is going in well. Come Sunday, it\u2019s going to be in the players\u2019 hands. I like our chances.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if he reminded the players that they\u2019re facing the defending NFC West Champions)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe players know that, they know that. Year after year it\u2019s either Seattle or Arizona or San Francisco. They know that, they know we also have a great opportunity to play one of the best teams in ball, based on the way they played last year, and they\u2019re playing well. The division is not at stake right now, it\u2019s just the outcome that we\u2019re dedicated to.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On how to get RB Todd Gurley going, and the role he plays in freeing up the passing game)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey witnessed it as well. They\u2019re going to do everything they can so it doesn\u2019t happen again, and we have to find a way. Obviously, Todd\u2019s production in this game is going to be important towards having a chance to win. We\u2019re going to have to get him involved, and keep him involved throughout the game. That game there, I think it was Week 4, he was involved until the end. The game-breaker was the big run where he took a knee, and all that. But, we can\u2019t let this game become one-dimensional. That\u2019s going to be up to our offense, and our defense, and our special teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On his thoughts regarding the new kickoff rule of bringing the ball out to the 25-yard line)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI got off the committee this offseason, so this rule change was made after I got off the committee.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if he game plans around making sure kickoffs stay out the end zone, to ensure a return)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAny time you change a rule like that there, what the competition committee refers to is there\u2019s going to be unintended consequences. So, you don\u2019t know until you go through it. My understanding is it\u2019s just for a year, and we\u2019ll see. But, that\u2019s a discussion that I would\u2019ve had, had I been there, is that we may just increase the number of kickoffs. You just bang the ball out of the back of the end zone, the ball is on the 25-yard line. Especially if you got kickers now with hang time, they can drop the ball a couple yards deep and entice the returner to come out, or on the goal line, and you got a good cover scheme, you can knock people down inside the 20-yard line. So, you gain the field position advantage. But I haven\u2019t seen the numbers, so I don\u2019t know where the numbers are after three weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if game planning around the kickoff rule change is something he\u2019s discussed with the team)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a competitive issue. I\u2019ll say maybe (laughter).\u201d<\/p>\n

(On if he\u2019s seen a shift in the team\u2019s confidence from Week 1 to now)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t. There was disappointment after Week 1, but we pulled them out of it. That\u2019s what we\u2019re most proud of right now. There\u2019s no lack of confidence at all. They have confidence in each other and they\u2019re playing together. I think that\u2019s carried us through the last couple weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On his relationship with Cardinals QB Carson Palmer)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI just have great respect for him, wherever he\u2019s been. He had some great years there at Cincinnati. There was that, \u2018What if\u2019 that was kind of that defining moment there on whether he was going to play or not, and then he got a chance to go to Oakland, and now he\u2019s found a great home with (Head Coach) Bruce (Arians) there, and great people around him. He\u2019s highly competitive, and every time we play them it\u2019s quite a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On how important it is to limit a high-powered offense, like Arizona, to field goals when defending the red zone)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAny time you play an offense like this, it\u2019s like the old Peyton Manning days. You have to take the approach that field goals are a win for your defense. The ball is going to get pushed down the field, you got to keep them out of the end zone \u2013 a field goal is a win. So when you take that approach, you have to counter it with touchdowns to have a chance to beat them.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On his thoughts regarding Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I got a chance to send him a voice-over. My memories of Vin were the hot summer nights here in the Valley and that little AM radio\u2026it was actually wood\u2026and it just had a volume, and you had to move the dial. But listening to him on the summer nights, going to sleep listening to the broadcast with (Ron) Cey, (Steve) Garvey, and (Bill) Russell, and (Davey) Lopes, that was my era growing up. He\u2019s had a fabulous career. I understand that his last comments on the final home game was a walk-off. How appropriate is that for him? He\u2019s a legend in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

(On if he knew that walk-off home run occurred during the lightening delay in Tampa)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI did not know that, no. Wow, there\u2019s a lot of things going on (laughter).\u201d<\/p>\n

Rams Offensive Coordinator Rob Boras \u2013 Post Practice \u2013 September 28, 2016<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

(On if he saw some improvement on Sunday from previous weeks)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, like I said a week ago, it was another step. I think it was a step in the right direction. There\u2019s a lot of positives that we\u2019re going to try to build on. And just like any time you play a game, there\u2019s a lot of things there that were mistakes or things that we left out there that we know we can do better. It was, again, a step, probably a bigger step than it was the week before and we\u2019re going to continue to get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if there are times when he\u2019s watching film of RB Todd Gurley and he\u2019s just missing a big run seemingly by an inch)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe clich\u00e9 that it\u2019s a game of inches has been around for a long time for a reason. There\u2019s a lot of those where you can see whether it\u2019s a couple inches or a foot, whatever it is, where it\u2019s a potential to being an explosive run. We\u2019re just going to be patient with it and they\u2019re going to come. Again, that one run he had down in the low redzone that he took from the 16 (yard-line) down to the one was about as good of a 15-yard run as I think you\u2019re ever going to see. I think, again, as effective as he was, it\u2019s going to continue to get better for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if seeing Gurley being that close to a big run gives him hope that it\u2019s just around the corner)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSure, and we\u2019ve seen it in the past and we\u2019re going to see it again sooner than later. He is as talented of a runner as I\u2019ve ever been around and we\u2019re going to continue to get better in the run game blocking and he\u2019s going to make his decisions. There\u2019s going to be some good things that are going to happen for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On possibly being two games ahead of Arizona in the standings with a win this week)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of football left, though. That\u2019s all you can do is play the game that\u2019s in front of you and you can\u2019t look ahead. We\u2019ve played three games, we\u2019ve got a lot more to go, so we\u2019re going to take this one and then we\u2019ll move on to whoever we have next and see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On the importance of potentially being two games above .500 after Sunday)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, again, anytime you can get above .500 is a great thing. Again, there\u2019s a lot of football left, the guys know it and we\u2019re focusing on Arizona right now. Once we focus on Arizona, then we\u2019ll move onto the next one. Anytime you win, it\u2019s really good, I\u2019m not trying to belittle it, we just have to focus on this game in front of us right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On what is holding TE Tyler Higbee back after having a strong preseason)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTyler is playing probably between 22 and 30 snaps a game, so he\u2019s getting on the field. He hasn\u2019t had the targets, really, since the San Fran game and that\u2019s not necessarily always by design, either, it\u2019s just the progression of where the ball is going. He\u2019s getting better. Again, as a former tight end coach, the success of a tight end is not always based on receptions, there\u2019s a lot of other things that we ask him to do. On the touchdown pass to (WR) Tavon (Austin) in the fourth quarter, Tyler was in protecting. For a guy that used to be a converted wide receiver, he had a big block in protection because (TE) Lance (Kendricks) wasn\u2019t on the field. I know we all want to see catches, but there\u2019s a lot more things that tight ends do and we\u2019re pleased with the direction that Tyler\u2019s going.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if it was a relief to get the team\u2019s first touchdown last week)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew it was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On Todd Gurley\u2019s breakout game last year against the Cardinals and things Arizona might look at on film to prevent)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAny time you play a team in your conference like we have with Seattle a couple weeks ago and now with Arizona, we know each other. They do what they do, we do what we do. They know what we do and we know what they do. Again, it\u2019s just trusting the process and you\u2019re going to try to window dress some things, but we\u2019re going to run our plays and try to take advantage of what we think we can do to spring not only Todd, but (RB) Benny (Cunningham) or in the pass game, to have our success as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On how big it was, confidence-wise for QB Case Keenum that the first touchdown was scored on a long pass)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, it\u2019s going to help confidence. I don\u2019t care if it was a one-yard pass or a 44-yard pass. Anytime you score a touchdown is a good thing. All of us and, again, being the first drive of the game, we\u2019ve scored twice in a row now, with a field goal against Seattle and a touchdown (against Tampa Bay). When you can start fast, and this time with a touchdown, it gives everybody confidence and it lets everybody play a little more confident and hopefully a little faster and go out there. The fact that it was a long one is great, but the fact that we scored, however it was, was more important.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if he has any direct communication with Keenum on the sidelines)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI can talk a couple different ways. We have a headset down there or I can talk to him \u2013 I can pick up the telephone or just talk through (quarterbacks) coach (Chris) Weinke to get to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if he had any message for him after Keenum\u2019s interception)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou just have to play, there\u2019s a lot of football left. We all saw what happened, obviously a mistake, but we also knew there was a lot of football left and you have got to play the next play. And that\u2019s what, I think, he did and the rest of the team did \u2013 you had a play the next play and we moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if it is a big accomplishment to possibly be 3-1 with three of the first four games on the road)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I think our guys are getting more confident right now. To start like that would be great. The thing is, as we all know, there was still a lot of things that we want to get better at and that\u2019s the challenge. The new challenges are now we are playing the Arizona Cardinals, who are a really good football team. To get to 3-1, again, would be great, but we have to focus on playing the game and see what happens. Arizona is a very talented football team.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On how Arizona\u2019s aggressiveness on defense impacts what the offense is going to try to do)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLike I said, they are a very good defense, they are aggressive with their pressures. Again, we\u2019re just going to have to do what we do. We\u2019re anticipating the pressure and we\u2019re going to have some answers for it and see if we can take advantage of some of those.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if there is anything he notices that Arizona is doing differently this year)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody has the wrinkles. Just like, I think when they look at us, offensively, they\u2019re going to see some things we do different. And that\u2019s why you have an offseason and OTAs and training camp, so there\u2019s always a couple things that you see. It\u2019s still the Arizona Cardinals\u2019 defense when you see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rams Quarterback Case Keenum \u2013 Post-Practice \u2013 September 28, 2016<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On executing on offense \u2013 scoring four touchdowns)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe executed \u2013 we executed in crucial situations. I think two of them were on third downs. Getting down to the red zone even with negative plays, you know, we overcame those things. Got in goal line situations, let 30 (RB Todd Gurley) do what 30 does.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On whether it is a big step offensively)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a step. I think each week is. We\u2019re trying to get better. I think for us, it\u2019s not something that we dwell on, not scoring touchdowns. Maybe you guys probably did a little more than we did \u2013 just a little bit. That\u2019s something we came here to do, and we\u2019re all used to doing, everybody in that meeting room, we\u2019re used to scoring touchdowns. It felt normal, felt right, felt good.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On how it felt, from a confidence standpoint, getting the first touchdown on a long pass) <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAwesome. It was fun. Anytime you score touchdowns \u2013 I tend to get pretty juiced up. Especially, when you throw them. On a third down conversion to have, my guy (WR Brian) Quick, make a big play down the field, it felt really good.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On the biggest difference between the first game against the 49ers and last Sundays games against the Buccaneers)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of differences. You can look on film \u2013 we just executed on third down. I think we met our goal on third down, we still had some plays that could be made. Like I said, we got better. There\u2019s still room to grow, which in my mind is a really good spot to be in, that we can get better \u2013 we played well. \u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On what it would mean to potentially be 3-1 after Sunday\u2019s game against Arizona)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime you win in this league it\u2019s big. Each time you do win, it makes the next win that much bigger. So, you might be asking me the same question next week \u2013 I hope you are, you know, for 4-1. Thats why we have the mindset of just going 1-0 that week, and focusing on that week. You can\u2019t really think about what\u2019s happened, you can\u2019t really think too much about what\u2019s ahead \u2013 you got to think about this week. There\u2019s enough on our plate this week to think about the magnitude of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On what stands out regarding the Cardinals defensively after not getting the chance to face them last season)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I was not playing. But, obviously studied them and was a part of the game plan process. I mean, it\u2019s the Cardinals defense. They\u2019re really good \u2013 they got a lot of players. Front end, it\u2019s one of the best in the league, with (DT Calais) Campbell spearheading it up there in front \u2013 (LB Deone) Bucannon, those backers are really good too. Then obviously, a guy you\u2019ve probably heard of, Patrick Peterson back there and the honey badger (S Tyrann Mathieu) too, they\u2019re all over the place. We got our work cut out for us, identifying fronts and coverages \u2013 knowing where they\u2019re lined up. Then, obviously, not just knowing \u2013 knowing how to execute and how to win. How to win certain plays, get first downs. We got our work cut out for us. It\u2019s a big challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On Patrick Peterson being a player to always be aware of \u2013 identifying where he is at all times) <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, for sure. With these guys though, you kind of have to know where they all are. I mean, they can all make plays, they can all do really, really good things. Obviously, 21 makes a lot of plays and he\u2019s around the ball a lot, he\u2019s definitely a guy we\u2019re going to have our eye on.\u00a0 \u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On getting into a rhythm rather than thinking about things too much \u2013 doing what he\u2019s seeing) <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI think so. I think I\u2019m getting better. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve got to do, that\u2019s what I concentrate on, is getting better. I think getting out of my own way at times has really helped. I think just trusting \u2013 trusting what I\u2019m seeing, trusting my guys. I think we\u2019re on a good path right now and I want to continue that.\u201d<\/p>\n

(On getting out of his own way)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like I said before, thinking too much, not trusting my instincts, not letting myself play football, handcuffing myself from seeing too much or seeing too little.\u201d<\/p>\n

(On whether he has memories of going to Los Angeles Rams games as a kid growing up in Orange County)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, never went to an NFL game. Really wasn\u2019t a Rams fan \u2013 because at age 15, I had just moved from Colorado, or maybe from Fresno. Before that I was in Colorado, so I was kind of a Bronco fan. Really no L.A. Ram memories.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On whether he ever thought he would come back to play at the Coliseum again in the NFL after leaving USC)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNever, never. I\u2019ll never forget what I thought was my last game there. Last home game there, when we played Notre Dame back in 2002\/3 \u2013 whatever it was. But yeah, never, never thought of it. When I heard all the commotion about the LA move and this and that \u2013 then it was St. Louis, you know, it was going to be San Diego \u2013 all of these different things. I got so excited because I have great memories.\u00a0 I did grow up, at least in high school, getting to go to SC games, you know as a fan, when I was getting recruited having the opportunity to go to those games. So the Coliseum has a very special place in my heart and I look forward to that game also.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

(On buying tickets for family and friends when he plays in front of his hometown crowd for the last game of the season against the Rams)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure. But there\u2019s a lot of football before that. I think that\u2019s the last game of the year. I\u2019ve got more pressing issues and things going on than that. But I\u2019m sure when the time comes there\u2019s going to be a lot of people wanting to go to that game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

(On flushing out the loss against Buffalo last Sunday)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one of those when you just can\u2019t wait to play again \u2013 you\u2019re leaving the stadium in Buffalo and you just can\u2019t wait for another opportunity to play \u2013 you\u2019ve got such a long week ahead of you, so much work to do and so much preparation to do. It\u2019s one of those that lasts with you until you get on the field again and find a way to win the next game or you just get a chance to play again \u2013 it\u2019s one of those that just lingers. It\u2019s a thorn in your side and you can\u2019t stop thinking about it. But you got to fight that urge. You got so many things you have to prepare for, you know, so much work to do during the week that it\u2019s really difficult to block that out \u2013 we\u2019re trying. But we\u2019re excited about getting to play on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

(On if there is anything in particular that stands out about the Rams defense)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIn my opinion, it\u2019s one of the best defenses in the league. They have had some issues where they\u2019ve had to be on the field a ton, just because what\u2019s been going on on the other side of the ball. It\u2019s tough to be one of the best defenses in the league if you\u2019re losing the time of possession battle and struggling on the other side of the ball. But when that offense is going and they\u2019re running the ball and that defense is fresh, it\u2019s as good as there is. Personnel-wise, it\u2019s probably one of the best, one of the top two or three, as far as personnel is concerned. And then you add in the fact that (defensive coordinator) Gregg Williams is dialing up pressures and calling the plays \u2013 he\u2019s one of the best there is at doing that. He\u2019s been that way for a long time, we have a ton of respect for him here. I have a ton of personal respect for the defenses that he\u2019s coached. It\u2019s a tremendous challenge offensively. We have to play our best football to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if he has ever had a six-minute stretch like he did in the fourth quarter against Buffalo last week where he threw four interceptions)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You get in the game and you\u2019re down (30-16), we were going two-minute drill in the third quarter. Obviously, not the ideal situation to be in and we had a number of miscues and a number of things that happened. When you\u2019re on the road and you\u2019re playing in a tough environment and you\u2019re playing from behind, it can go south real quick and it did on us. I\u2019m looking to bounce back this week and, like I said, looking forward to getting back on the field to play again to redeem myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if the Rams being patient with QB Jared Goff reminds him of his rookie season with the Bengals as a rookie)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I think it\u2019s pretty similar. You either throw the guy in there or you let him sit back and rest, and only the coach can make that decision. The coach and the coaches know what\u2019s going on within the building and know what\u2019s best for the team. And sometimes they make that decision and sometimes \u2013 you look at (Colts QB) Andrew Luck or (Eagles QB) Carson Wentz \u2013 Andrew Luck was going to get thrown in there right away, Carson Wentz had some issues, the guy ahead of him got traded, somebody got hurt and all of a sudden he\u2019s in there. I just think every situation is so different, every team is so different, every organization is so different. The head coach makes the decision what\u2019s best for the team and, obviously he thinks it\u2019s best for the team for Jared to sit and watch and learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On what he thinks quarterbacks gain from sitting as a rookie)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a chance to watch how you prepare as a starter, how you go about your business as a starter \u2013 especially if you\u2019re coming from a very non-pro-style offense \u2013 seeing how offenses prepare, seeing the different pressures you\u2019re going to see and the different defenses you\u2019re going to see. And if you\u2019re not ready, it\u2019s tough. If you\u2019re not ready and you get thrown in there, if you struggle, it can linger. There\u2019s such a fine line between throwing a guy in there and making him play and a guy, when it\u2019s the best situation for your team and he knows he\u2019s going to go in and struggle because the team\u2019s not good, like some guys have been. The Rams are different, that\u2019s a very good team, they don\u2019t need to throw a rookie in there and him learn on the run and the team suffer. They\u2019ve got a veteran that has their team at the top of the division. So, obviously, every situation is different and every situation is unique.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if there\u2019s a sense of urgency for the team to get back to the NFC Championship game from a year ago)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAlways. There\u2019s a sense of urgency no matter what your record is. We\u2019ve talked as a team. We were in this situation last year. We had come back from Pittsburgh, and I think we were 2-2 at the time, maybe, and then just got on a run, and ended up 13-3. There\u2019s always urgency, but at the same time, there\u2019s a ton of football left. All of our goals are still in front of us. It\u2019s easy to get negative if you lose two games early, especially two-out-of-three, but we\u2019re staying positive. We\u2019re excited about the group of guys we have and about the football that\u2019s ahead of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On if there\u2019s any panic from the team)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it\u2019s too early for anybody to panic right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(On his thoughts on Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians\u2019 words regarding team\u2019s chemistry)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI always support everything our coach says, he\u2019s our coach. We had some issues with some young guys that he wanted to get straightened out, and he wanted us older guys to help straighten that out. Some of his words helped straighten it out. We go where our coach tells us to go. We lead the way he expects us to lead.
