So Temple City isn’t folding its\u00a0football program. Great news.\u00a0By hiring an on campus teacher as the head coach the administration has at least shown\u00a0that they are interested in creating some consistency\u00a0and some interest\u00a0in a program that desperately needs it.<\/p>\n

Is Riley\u00a0Saxon the savior\u00a0for Temple City?\u00a0Will the Rams suddenly make an about face and contend for a\u00a0Rio Hondo League title? No of course not.\u00a0But it’s a big\u00a0step in the right direction. Saxon is familiar with the program\u00a0having played quarterback for Temple City a decade ago\u00a0and has coached\u00a0in the program\u00a0for several years previously. Saxon was the head coach of the junior varsity in 2012\u00a0and ’13, coached the freshman in 2014 and was the quarterbacks coach for the varsity in 2015.\u00a0He has earned the respect of the players and\u00a0by all accounts has a great relationship with the administration.<\/p>\n

With Saxon on campus on a daily basis\u00a0it gives him a\u00a0chance to\u00a0create a buzz\u00a0about\u00a0football and get more kids out.\u00a0He won’t have to make a long trek to get to the football field for practice every day. Heck, he’s already there.\u00a0It will also give him the opportunity to\u00a0keep tabs on his players, not only making sure\u00a0they’re ready for practice but ready for the classroom.\u00a0Need to have a quick football meeting at noon on a Tuesday?\u00a0No problem now with an on campus coach.<\/p>\n

All of this\u00a0is great but without the support of the administration it means nothing.\u00a0However would\u00a0Saxon\u00a0have been hired if the admin wasn’t planning on giving him\u00a0their full support? Doesn’t seem likely.\u00a0This could work out. The Rams\u00a0are seemingly back on the right track.<\/p>\n

I understood\u00a0Jeanie\u00a0Buss firing\u00a0her brother Jim Buss and GM Mitch Kupchak.\u00a0The Lakers\u00a0are now in\u00a0their fourth year of ineptitude\u00a0and for an organization that was used to hanging\u00a0championship banners\u00a0nearly every other year in the eighties and five\u00a0more in the 2000s this was unacceptable.\u00a0But what did John Black do?\u00a0Black,\u00a0who was the Lakers\u00a0head of Public Relations\u00a0for over 30 years, was also sent packing last week.\u00a0What? So the PR guy was responsible for signing Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng?\u00a0Rumors were that Black was too close to Kupchak but it still seems odd.\u00a0Will Magic Johnson make a difference?\u00a0I don’t know?\u00a0can he still play point guard?<\/p>\n

Speaking of the NBA did anybody catch that garbage they called an All-Star game last Sunday?\u00a0The game has been in a steady decline over the last several\u00a0years but this year it was an abomination.\u00a0I’d call it\u00a0pick up ball but that’s an embarrassment\u00a0to pick up players everywhere. I’ve seen more defense played down at Live Oak Park on a Sunday afternoon.\u00a0ESPNs\u00a0Stephen A. Smith called it disgusting\u00a0and Reggie Miller called it a joke. Can you imagine\u00a0paying to watch this? Changes need to be made. By the way the slam dunk contest also wore out its welcome years ago.<\/p>\n

If you want to see some real basketball head out to Felix Event Center at Azusa Pacific University this Friday and Saturday nights.\u00a0Big week for the Rose City.\u00a0Pasadena, Blair and Maranatha have all made the CIF Finals.\u00a0Pasadena plays Harvard-Westlake\u00a0Friday night at 9:00 p.m. at APU.\u00a0Blair\u00a0plays West Torrance\u00a0Saturday night at 6:00\u00a0and Maranatha battles Rancho Verde Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Oh,Burbank was the other local team to crash the party. The Bulldogs\u00a0will face Brentwood Friday night at 7:00.\u00a0Huge year in sports for the Bank as the\u00a0football and the basketball teams both made\u00a0it to the CIF Final.<\/p>\n

Ready for some baseball?\u00a0It\u00a0was kind of\u00a0cool while channel surfing Sunday to see the Dodgers and Brewers\u00a0playing\u00a0some\u00a0spring ball in Phoenix.\u00a0Cody Bellinger belted a\u00a0home run and\u00a0the Dodgers\u00a0went on to outslug Milwaukee\u00a010-8. While it was cool for me, I’ve never\u00a0not had the Dodgers channel,\u00a0I kept thinking how uncool it must be for 70 percent of\u00a0the fans in Los Angeles that can’t see the Dodgers. Did you know this is the fourth year that\u00a0fans without\u00a0Time Warner\/Spectrum\u00a0won’t\u00a0be able to watch the Dodgers?\u00a0Does it take a little of the sting away\u00a0knowing that Vin Scully retired?<\/p>\n

Without Scully is it really “Time for Dodger baseball?”<\/p>\n
