Montes

By Alex Gonzalez

(Monrovia) — La Salle quarterback CJ Montes threw four touchdown passes on 12-17 passing in the Lancers 42-40 come from behind win over Monrovia Friday night at Monrovia High School.

After sitting out the first three series on offense for the Lancers, freshmen quarterback, CJ Montes was already playing catch up when he entered the game. The Lancer offense struggled to get anything going with Chris Wilson who threw a pick six before he was sidelined.

The Lancer defense was the first to strike when Tre Stewart picked off Trevor McPherson’s pass and returned it for six early in the first quarter to put his team up 7-0.

That, however, was the only points scored before Monrovia scored 20 unanswered points before the half.

Runningback Maury Rams IV bulldozed his way into the end zone tying the ball game at seven. On the Lancers following possession Michael Washinton picked up Wilson’s pass and returned it to the house, pushing the lead 14-7 early in the second quarter.

The Lancer offense tried to answer back on their next possession, but Montes fumble as he was throwing and Frank Hernandez recovered for the Wildcats. Two plays later Washington hauled in McPherson’s pass for the touchdown, extending Monrovia’s lead 20-7.

La Salle rallied back and responded on their next possession driving down the field in eight plays that was capped off by Montes linking up with his wideout for the seven-yard score with 5:40 left in the second frame.

However, M-Town answered right back of a scoring drive of their own when Rams punched in his second score of the night before intermission.

Following the break, the Lancer defense shut down Rams and forced the Wildcats to a quick three and out. Two plays later, Montes connected with his wideout again for a 40-yard bomb, making the score 21-27 after the point after attempt.

Monrovia answered right back when R’mon Huff caught the pass in traffic and danced his way to the end zone making the Wildcat score 34-21 mid-way through the third quarter.

The Lancers were able to return the favor when they drove down the field and ended their five play drive when Montes threw his third touchdown pass of the night, pulling with in six of the Wildcats.

After a series of punts by both schools, The Lancers took the lead when Montes faked the handoff and found his wideout alone in the end zone giving La Salle a 35-34 edge over Monrovia with 9:32 left in the game.

The Lancer offense then added insurance when their tailback ice skated his way into the end zone from 45-yards outs. La Salle lead 42-34 with 3:38 left to play.

M-Town did respond with a scoring drive on their next possession after Rams scored his third rushing score but the offense failed the 2-point conversion.

Some Stuff
***CJ Montes 12-17 passing 166-yards 4 touchdown passes.
***“Feels good, feels real good.
