“The Devil’s Herd” of South El Monte…<\/p><\/div>\n

(South El Monte)\u2014The South El Monte Eagles scored five first half touchdowns, scored another in the second half and ran to a 42-0 victory over La Puente on Friday night at The Swamp on the campus of South El Monte High School.<\/p>\n

The Southmen had six possessions in the first half, and after spotting the Warriors and early turnover (a fumble on their second offensive play), they scored on their next six possessions.<\/p>\n

South HC, Frank Gallardo said after last season the Eagles wanted to diversify offensively. This would have a double benefit of keeping Sal Tovar fresh throughout the season as well as exploit the talents of quarterback Daniel Olmos.<\/p>\n

The senior signal caller went 28-yards across the middle to wide receiver Richard \u201cSticks\u201d Nava and came right back to him on the next play on a 40-yard bomb to the end zone.<\/p>\n

So it was time to go back to Tovar, right? Sorry Hans, wrong guess. Instead, the Eagles gave the ball to Jarvis Godinez their next possession.<\/p>\n

Godinez went 18-yards on a pass from Olmos. Then, four plays later ripped through the LP defense for a 29-yard touchdown run.<\/p>\n

Gaspar Beltran continued (and would continue) to add the extra-points, and for now, it was 14-0.<\/p>\n

After three different players excelled with the ball, Gallardo went back to Tovar. The senior ground gainer scored on a 21-yard touchdown run and followed it with a 77-yard scoring run.<\/p>\n

Then with 2:43 to play in the half, Godinez went 50-yards to paydirt.<\/p>\n

The second half was played with a running clock\u2026And Tovar started the Eagles end of the third quarter with a 72-yard scoring run called back on a penalty. A couple of minutes later, he was forced to settle for a 46-yard touchdown sprint.<\/p>\n

La Puente turned the ball over on downs twice and punted six times in between. The Warriors were suffocated by the Eagles defense. Mark Sosa recorded a sack, Tovar broke up a pass and the rest of the unit swarmed to the ball.<\/p>\n

The defense was solid, the offensive diversified and what made everything for Frank Gallardo team was his offensive line.<\/p>\n

Anthony Hernandez, Sergio Jimenez, Anthony Gomez, Javier Martinez and Fernando Flores, \u201cThe Devil\u2019s Herd,\u201d plowed the road and made all things possible in Week One of the 2017 season.<\/p>\n

Including 436 yards of total offensive\u2026Olmos completing 7 of 7 passes for 118-yards and a touchdown\u2026Tovar rushing for 207 yards on 8 carries\u2026Godinez combining for over 100-yards rushing and receiving.<\/p>\n

South host\u2019s Walnut next week. While La Puente, now 1-1, gets a much needed week off before facing Hacienda Heights Wilson at home on September 15.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
