(Montebello) – Schurr opened up a two score lead in the second half and then had to hold on for a 38-35 win over Montebello Friday night before a packed house at Heamon Field.<\/p>\n

The game was tied at 14 at the half but the Spartans came out in the third quarter and took control. They pieced together 10-play, 53-yard drive with Sebastian Ramos scoring from three yards out for a 21-14 lead.<\/p>\n

After a Montebello punt Schurr went to work again. This time the Spartans needed only eight plays to go 80 yards. Ramos found the end zone again, this time on a seven-yard jaunt. The extra point was missed but Schurr was was up 27-14.<\/p>\n

Gabriel Tapia, who returned last week after an injury kept bringing the Oilers back. He led Montebello on an 80-yard drive and finished it with a 10-yard TD strike to Bryan Martinez to cut the lead to 27-21 with 7:31 left in the contest.<\/p>\n

The Spartans responded again. Ramos picked up his third of the night on a nine-yard run to cap a 57-yard march. Miguel Aguero hit Lance Babb for a two point conversion to make it 35-21.<\/p>\n

The ensuing kickoff sealed the Oilers fate. They coughed it up and the Spartans fell on the fumble\u00a0 at the Montebello 17. The Oilers managed to hold Schurr to a field goal but Francisco Remigio split the uprights from 29 yards out for a 38-21 advantage with 3:44 remaining.<\/p>\n

The Oilers had one one last run in them. Less than two minutes later Tapia hit Steven Chee on a 30-yard touchdown pass over the middle to get Montebello within ten.<\/p>\n

Schurr was forced to punt and when the kick was partially blocked Montebello had the ball its own 39. A 42-yard run by Tapia set up a one-yard plunge by Kris Rodriguez and it was 38-35. It was too little too late however and with 29 seconds left Schurr fell on the onside kick.<\/p>\n

One kneel down later, the Spartans were in celebration mode.<\/p>\n

Montebello scored first. A 73-yard run by Mykael Loera set up a two-yard run by Rodriguez in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Schurr tied it on 14-yard touchdown pass from Aguero to Babb.<\/p>\n

A 96-yard drive capped by four-yard pass from Aguero to Remigio gave Schurr a 14-7 advantage. Montebello tied it with 3:11 left the half on a five-yard run by Rodriguez.<\/p>\n

Aguero finished with 271 yards and two touchdowns. Ramos rushed for 117 yards and two scores for Schurr.<\/p>\n

Tapia threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards in a losing cause for Montebello.<\/p>\n

“It was an amazing game that we played and put together. We knew this thing was going to be a nail biter,” said Schurr Head Coach David Ramos. “We knew we were going to come back in the second half and make this thing a game. But we just talked about fighting through it. They’re champions and they’re going to work there way through it until we take it from them.”<\/p>\n

It was the first time Schurr had beaten the Oilers since 2012. Schurr improved to 6-1 with the victory and has the inside track on the Almont League title at 2-0. Montebello fell to 1-1 and 4-3.<\/p>\n
