Nin Burns II accounts for four scores for the Colts.<\/p><\/div>\n

(Covina) – Covina jumped out to a 28-0 lead on the legs and arm of Nin Burns II and went on to beat Westminster 42-28 Thursday night in a CIF Division 11 Playoff second round contest at Covina District Field.<\/p>\n

The sophomore quarterback threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 105 and another score to lead the Colts. <\/p>\n

Neither team got out of the gate quick and it wasn’t until just over two minutes left in the first quarter that the scorekeeper was able to hit the lights on the scoreboard. Ailaoa Tauvao punched the ball across the goal line from a yard out to cap a 10 play 32 yard drive.<\/p>\n

Early in the second quarter Burns got the Colts on the board again on a 67 yard scamper to paydirt. Tristan Sprague added the extra point for the 14-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Covina extended its lead to 28-0 on a 45 yard pass from Burns to Sprague and a strip and score of 60 yards from Jacob Gregory who wrenched the ball away from the Lion’s Christian Jaime.<\/p>\n

Westminster scored twice in the second quarter to cut the Colts’ lead to 28-14 at halftime. One of Westminster’s touchdowns was a gift by Covina as the Lions turned a muffed kickoff by the Colts into a score.<\/p>\n

The Lions came out of the break and immediately marched 70 yards on 13 plays to cut the lead to seven. The Westminster score came on a a five yard run from Jaime.<\/p>\n

The Colts answered the Lion score with one of their own on the ensuing drive. Sprague caught his second touchdown pass from seven yards out to finish off an impressive 16-play 84 yard drive. Sprague also added the extra point on the score.<\/p>\n

With 7:37 left in the final frame, Westminster once again cut the lead to 35-28 on a 2-yard run by Jaime.<\/p>\n

Anthony Ramirez took the ensuing kickoff and raced to the Westminster 46 yard line to set the Colts up with excellent field position. Four plays later Burns found Danny Urea who got loose for a 40 catch and run for the score. <\/p>\n

The two teams traded turnovers on interceptions and Burns second interception on the night gave the Lions some hope with 3:39 left to play. The hope would be short lived however as Westminster’s Ricardo Cazares coughed ball up on his own 43 and was quickly pounced on by the Colt’s James Duronslet.<\/p>\n

A few plays later Burns was able to take a knee on consecutive snaps to run out the clock.<\/p>\n

Covina will now await to see who wins the Coachella Valley and Culver City game to see where they will be playing. Per CIF Southern Sections coin flip info, if Coachella Valley wins, the Colts will host and if Culver City wins they will be on the road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
