When the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard showed a 59-28 advantage for the visitors from Apple Valley.

Montebello got the ball to start the game but didn’t get much going and punted the ball away on their fourth play from scrimmage.

Apple Valley on the other hand wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. After receiving the punt from the Oilers at their own 11, the Sun Devils needed only one play to go the 89 yards. Donovan Ferguson sliced his way through the Montebello defense and was off to the races for the score. The extra point was added and Apple Valley led early in the first.

With the Oilers unable to get and traction on offense, the Sun Devils managed to increase their first half lead to 24-0 on a six yard run by Ferguson and a 64 yard catch and run from Jeff Widener to Nicholas Rodriguez and a 25 yard field goal by the mystery kicker who also moonlighted as the right tackle.

Coming out of the locker rooms after the halftime festivities, the Sun Devils increased their advantage to 31-0 on a 38 yard pass from Widener to Chad Smith to cap a 5-play 65 yard drive.

It was tough sledding for Michael Vital and the Montebello ground attack.

Montebello broke through and got on the board with 4:56 left in the third quarter. Robert Maldonado punched the ball across the goal line from 1-yard away. The score was a culmination of a 4-play 70 yard drive. The highlight of the drive came when Richard Placencia took the ball on the jet sweep, pulled up and fired the ball deep down field to Bryan Martinez for a 38 yard gain.

The emotion of the touchdown however would be short lived as Ferguson took the ensuing kickoff, worked his way through the Oiler defenders, jumped on his horse and was gone for a 79 yard touchdown.

The Oilers looked up and saw themselves down 45-7 nearing the end of the third quarter. Their pride kicked in and they went on a 12 play march that covered 65 yards with Maldonado calling his own number from 22 yards out.

Montebello was able to scoop up the onside kick and the Oilers were in business again.

Starting from the Apple Valley 49, the Oilers covered those 49 yards on just four plays. Pete Gonzalez Jr. called for a flea-flicker which the Oiler completed to perfection and Maldonado hit Andres Lopez for an 11 yard score.

The following onside kick did not work as well this time and the ball failed to go ten yards and went out of bounds at the Montebello 48. One play later the Oilers were down 52-21 as Widener hooked up with Xander Witt on a 48 yard catch and run.

Midway through the fourth quarter and down by 31, the Oilers were forced to go for a fourth-and-six at their own 42. Maldonado’s pass fell incomplete and the ball was turned over on downs. Four plays later the Sun Devils were in the endzone again.

As the clock was winding down on the game and the Oiler 2017 season, Montebello put their final drive together going 86 yards on ten plays with Placencia hauling in a 35 yard pass from Maldonado. Andres Nava booted through the extra point as time ran out.

By Duane Barker (Montebello) The Montebello Oilers hosted the Apple Valley Sun Devils Friday night in the second round of the CIF Division 10 playoffs and the Sun Devils turned out to be rude guests.
