Andrade threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two to lead Bonita to a 28-14 victory over San Dimas in the Smudge Pot Saturday night before a packed house at Covina District Field.

Andrade’s touchdown passes came on quick strikes to begin the game. He hit Jarret DanceKelley for a 55-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game. On the Bearcats next series he found a wide open Cade Cadum (cool name) for a 60-yard TD strike with 8:52 left in the first quarter and before some late arriving fans found parking places it was 14-0 Bonita.

San Dimas, behind a solid running attack battled back to tie the game at 14 at halftime, but Andrade had an answer in he fourth quarter. First he found Aalias Williams for 32 yards down to the Saint two-yard line. On the next play he kept it and cruised into the end zone for a 21-14 lead.

The Bearcats forced the Saints to punt and Andrade did it again. Bonita moved down to the San Dimas 27-line. Andrade had his number called and made the most of it racing 27 yards to pay dirt and taking a couple of tacklers with him. With just 3:46 left on the clock a two touchdown advantage was like Mt. Everest to San Dimas.

“He can run, he can throw and he sees the field. He’s just a great football player, a smart player,” said Bonita coach Steve Bogan.

Things looked like it might not go the Saints way when Dylan O’leary was intercepted on their first play from scrimmage. O’Leary had Matt Sloan open but Williams leaped up and made a play to pick it off.

Matt Sloan and San Dimas rushed for 215 yards overall but it wasn’t enough.

Down two scores San Dimas got back on track chewing up yardage on the ground. Late in the first quarter and into the second, the Saints pieced together a 13-play, 75-yard drive that was helped by two personal foul penalties on Bonita. Austin Rivera capped the march with seven-yard run.

Later in the second the Saints moved 63 yards, again on 13 plays to get even. Jacob Buccola rumbled five yards for the score with 4:21 left in the half.

Twice San Dimas was stopped on fourth down in the second half – once on the Bonita 16 and again on the 30. Bonita scored on two of its three possessions in the second half before taking over with under two minutes left and taking a knee to run out the clock.

Andrade completed 8 of 13 and needed just three carries to rush for 32 yards and the two scores. Cadum had 3 catches for 105 yards and one touchdown.

The Saints had 215 yards on the ground led by Sloan’s 77 but it wasn’t enough to cancel out Bonita’s big plays.

“This is great. I’ve never been a part of this. Ever since I got the job people were telling me you have to beat these guys,” Bogan said.

San Dimas coach Mark Holman gave credit to the Bearcats.

“They’re a great football team, you guys saw that. We made too many mistakes but when you make them against a good football team you’re going to get beat,” Holman said. “But we’ll be back. We’ve got a young group of guys and we’ll bounce back.

Bonita improved to 4-0 while San Dimas is 2-1.

By Tim Peterson (Covina) – J.P.
