Remember Covina-Monrovia a few weeks ago? Both teams can score, that’s a given. The question is who will make the most stops? Covina on occasion has shown signs of solid defense. The Colts did hold South El Monte to 9 points and West Covina to 16. They have also been torched a couple of times. Monrovia racked up 50 in a loss. Interesting fact about San Dimas – in four of its five wins the Saints have allowed 14 points. They’ll allow more than 14 in this one but they will get the win. The Saints defense comes up big in the fourth quarter.

San Dimas 35 Covina 28

Del Rio

Santa Fe (1-5) at La Serna (6-1) at California

Santa Fe needs a win to kick off league play. La Serna needs the victory to continue its quest to run through the Del Rio. The loss to Warren two weeks ago just made the Lancers mad. They dropped 49 on Cal a week ago and it may be more here. La Serna gets out of the gate quickly and never lets off the gas. It might be over by halftime.

La Serna 52 Santa Fe 13

Friday October 5

Almont

Montebello (2-4) at Alhambra (5-1) at Moor Field

Alhambra felt what it was like in the Almont with last week’s loss to Schurr. The Moors will get another taste of that medicine against Montebello. The Oilers had to rally last week to beat Bell Gardens for a huge win. Another Oiler win here will set up a showdown with Schurr on October 12 for the league title. Alhambra will hang around. The Moors gave Schurr fits last week before succumbing. But in the end Montebello will prevail. The Oilers are still one of the big boys in the Almont.

Montebello 31 Alhambra 17

Hacienda

Charter Oak (1-5) at Diamond Ranch (4-2)

Charter Oak got off the mat last week with a big win over West Covina. The Chargers started off slow with five straight losses but are now trying to do some damage in the Hacienda and get in the playoffs. Diamond Ranch is coming off a win over Los Altos. Although the win was uglier than the Brett Kavanaugh hearing, it was a victory for the Panthers. Los Altos committed some crucial turnovers in the loss. Charter Oak probably won’t. The Chargers aren’t your typical 1-5 team. They know a win here and they’re suddenly right back in the driver’s seat. Diamond Ranch may hold the lead for awhile but the Chargers pull it out late. After all, it’s Charter Oak.

Charter Oak 27 Diamond Ranch 24

Mission Valley

Arroyo (5-1) at South El Monte (3-3)

There’s been lot of noise this week about South El Monte upsetting Arroyo. The Eagles are back, they say. The Eagles aren’t the same team that lost to Alhambra they say. Okay, well see. The Knights have steamrolled to five straight victories after a Zero Week loss to Bonita. In case you haven’t noticed Bonita is undefeated on the field. South El Monte blasted Mt. View and Gabrielino but doesn’t everybody? Arroyo and South do share a common non-league opponent in Nogales. Arroyo bombed the Nobles 48-7 while the Eagles struggled to beat them 28-21. If everything goes right for South and everything goes wrong for Arroyo, the Eagles have a chance. I just don’t see it. CV brushed aside Burroughs last week 28-7. Burbank will test them. The Bulldogs don’t roll over for anybody. But they won’t have enough. The Bearcats have had close calls. They beat Covina and Colony by a touchdown in each of the last two weeks. Alta Loma has only fallen to Damien. The Braves had big wins over Los Osos and Don Lugo earlier in the year. The winner moves to the top of the Palomares, which may be the toughest league in the area. Bonita and Steve Bogan just keep finding a way to win. It won’t be easy, it never is.
