Diamond Ranch is unbeaten in league and a win here would put them directly in the driver’s seat. South Hills can score but has mostly been doing it with defense. They have allowed only 53 points all year with 20 of them coming in a win over Mira Costa. The Panthers haven’t been bad defensively either. Look for a close game deep into the fourth quarter. It depends on who makes one more stop. South Hills comes up big late. A month ago I would have said Montebello rolls, but the picture has changed a little now. The two teams have common opponents in Garfield and Alhambra. The Oilers fell to Garfield by three touchdowns and then, in an upset lost to Alhambra last week 35-22. Schur got worked by Garfield 41-0 but did knock off the Moors 27-23 two weeks ago. It will be a tough physical game with both teams leaving it all on the field. You could probably flip a coin and decide the winner. The home field advantage could be the difference. Schurr wins the Backyard Brawl.

Schurr 24 Montebello 21

Hacienda

Los Altos ( 3-4) at Charter Oak (1-6)

Last week seemed like Charter Oak’s last gasp, however a win here and the Chargers could still finish in the top three in the Hacienda. Los Altos, like CO, is 1-1 in league and also desperately needs a W to stay in the hunt. The Conquerors can make things happen on offense as long as they can avoid the turnovers which has been a thorn in their side all year. Chargers will hang around all night but in the end Los Altos gets it done. Can Arroyo stop El Monte’s running game? That’s what it comes down to. The numbers speak for themselves. Arroyo, led by Ernesto Camacho, has thrown for 1,637 yards and 15 touchdowns overall, and rushed for 1054 and 22 scores. El Monte’s stats are even more one sided. The Lions have rushed for 2,244 yards and 33 touchdowns while passing for 280 yards and 6 scores. Davon Booth alone has 1,135 and 18 TDs. Both teams have lost only once. For El Monte it was an eye opener as San Marino dropped 76 on the Lions in Week 2. Arroyo fell 42-24 to Bonita to kick off the season but the Bearcats haven’t lost all year. El Monte has had an incredible season and should make a deep run in the Division 13 playoffs. But this is still Arroyo, the King of the MVL. Can the Lions beat the Knights? Maybe. But I still have to see it to believe it. Last week J.P. Andrade and Cade Cadum had a field day as Bonita dropped 50 on Alta Loma. An explosive offense has been the Bearcats MO all year. Ayala has had a tough time in the Palomares. The Bulldogs were 5-0 entering league play only to lose their last two. Ayala doesn’t look like a team that can slow down Bonita. Glendora hit the Dogs with 45 two weeks ago. Andrade and company do their thing again and the Cats roll to another victory. Northview is looking to remain unbeaten while a win for Covina would turn the league upside down. With Guys like Nin Burns II, Erik Cuellar, James Jimenez and Deshon Thompson there will be a lot of points put up on the board. It seems like every time I see the Colts somebody is putting up 50. Northview can score but has a pretty solid defense as well. There’s no question Covina’s offense can stay with Northview, but can the Colts make enough stops? Probably not. Muir was dominated by the Falcons while Burbank knocked them off last week. Muir will be tough at home but Burbank won’t be intimidated. An Aztecs win would put them clearly in control at 3-0. Workman, under first year head coach Hector Spathias, got worked by Nogales in the league opener but bounced back to drop 55 on Gladstone last week. If the Lobos can play some defense, the offense should be able to do enough to get it done. However the Lobos have been torched on occasion this season including allowing 60 to Fairmont Prep and 52 to Rio Hondo Prep. Last team with the ball could win this one.
