(Alhambra)-\u00a0Sophomore quarterback Noah Rodriguez threw three touchdown passes to lead the Alhambra Moors to a 26-6 opening-night win over the South El Monte Eagles on Friday night at Moor Field.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rodriguez completed 10 of 21 throws for 148 yards, with no interceptions. Two of his scoring passes went to senior wide receiver Kody Chuang, including a 43-yard bomb which extended the Moors’ lead to 13-0 in the first quarter.<\/p>\n
Chuang’s diving catch of a seven-yard TD pass from Rodriguez enabled Alhambra to go ahead, 20-0, midway through the second quarter.<\/p>\n
Senior running back Henry Soto scored the Moors’ final points on a four-yard run late in the third period.<\/p>\n
Senior wide receiver\/cornerback Vito Russell also played a key role in Alhambra’s victory. In addition to catching a 12-yard TD pass, he set up three touchdowns with a fumble recovery, a 54-yard punt return, and an interception.<\/p>\n
Sophomore running back Isaac Hernandez led the Moors in rushing with 11 carries for 72 yards.
\nHead Coach Eric Bergstrom’s team won for the ninth time in its last 11 games, dating back to the beginning of the 2018 season.<\/p>\n
Alhambra’s defense held South El Monte to only 31 yards on the ground, so the visiting Eagles had to rely primarily on their passing attack.<\/p>\n
Junior quarterback Mario Zamudio completed 24 of 36 passes for 246 yards, but he threw two costly interceptions and was sacked twice by Alhambra defensive end Bailey Robinson, a senior.<\/p>\n
Junior running back Andrew Munoz scored the Eagles’ only points on a 43-yard pass reception early in the fourth quarter; he ended up with six catches for a total of 120 yards.<\/p>\n
