(Monetbello) –\u00a0Sophomore quarterback Noah Rodriguez completed 14 of 22 passes for 261 yards and six touchdowns as the Alhambra Moors routed the Schurr Spartans, 69-27, in their Almont League opener Friday night.
\nThe Moors scored on their first seven possessions to build a 49-0 lead shortly before halftime on Schurr’s homecoming night.<\/p>\n
The victory was Alhambra’s first over the Spartans since 2012, and their first at Schurr High since 2011. Coach Eric Bergstrom’s team is now 6-0 on the season.<\/p>\n
The Moors, who start league play with three straight road games, will prepare for a first-place showdown against the Montebello Oilers this coming Friday. The Oilers defeated Bell Gardens, 22-15, in their league opener.<\/p>\n
Alhambra wide receiver Vito Russell starred against Schurr, catching four passes from Rodriguez for a total of 171 yards and three touchdowns. Slot man Kody Chuang scored three TD’s of his own while making five catches for 43 yards.<\/p>\n
The Moors also rushed for 193 yards as they accumulated 454 yards in total offense.<\/p>\n
Sophomore running back Issac Hernandez led Alhambra’s ground attack with five carries for 96 yards, which included an 82-yard scoring run in the closing moments of the game.<\/p>\n
Two fumble recoveries by outside linebacker Damien Rosa and a pass interception by free safety Tyler Gonzalez set up touchdowns for the Moors.<\/p>\n
Most of Schurr’s offense came from quarterback Jesse Preciado, who passed for two scores and ran for another. He connected on 18 of 29 passes for a total of 222 yards.
\nPreciado’s leading receiver was Ray Whitney, who caught four passes for 91 yards and a TD.<\/p>\n
The Spartans rushed for just 62 yards against the Moors. The loss to Alhambra dropped Schurr’s overall record to 2-4.<\/p>\n
