Alex “Gonzo” Gonzalez was on the coverage to see Whittier’s Johnathan Areceneaux run wild in the Cardinals rout of Cal on October 18, 2019. We had a rough start in the first half, but we came out in the second half and put a fork in it.”

With both teams struggling to produce points in the first quarter, Arceneaux and the Whittier offense exploded for three touchdowns on consecutive drives in the second quarter.

Aj Vazquez got the scoring started when he connected with Christian Guerrero, who was alone in the flat and took it to the end zone untouched. Then Arceneaux extended the lead to 12-0 after he crossed into pay dirt midway through the frame.

Lastly, before the halftime buzzer, Vazquez found Memo Tellechea, who then bulldozed his way for the touchdown, putting the score at 20-0 after a failed 2-point conversion.

The Condors finally got on the board when Kenny Pliego converted his first field goal out of three tries from 45 yards out.

However, Cal’s defense could not slow down Arceneaux and Co. for the rest of the second half. Just as the fourth quarter started, Arceneaux took the handoff and outran the defense from 61 yards out. He then put the nail in the coffin when he punched in his third score with 2:13 left in the final frame put the score at 34-3.

“This year, we just got to win these next two games, and then we should be in the playoffs,” said Arceneaux after the game.

With the win, the Cardinals evened their league record at 1-1 and look to get above .500 when they host Santa Fe next Thursday. California hopes to bounce back when it hosts El Rancho next Friday night.

Another one from Week 8 of last year in our “One Year Ago” series.
