{"id":73591,"date":"2021-09-30T21:58:45","date_gmt":"2021-10-01T04:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=73591"},"modified":"2021-10-01T01:05:42","modified_gmt":"2021-10-01T08:05:42","slug":"san-gabriel-42-montebello-28-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=73591","title":{"rendered":"Matadors Hold off Oilers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By George Hernandez <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(San Gabriel) &#8211; San Gabriel running back Robert Lucero had three scores in the first half leading the way to the Matadors 42-28 victory over Montebello Thursday night at San Gabriel high school.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Matadors night didn\u2019t start off good fumbling the ball right over to the Oilers on their first play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adn ads\" data-message-id=\"#msg-f:1712402556027996056\" data-legacy-message-id=\"17c3ad0d50850798\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":7u\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":7t\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div>Montebello wasn&#8217;t able to do much and was forced to punt on three and out.<br \/><br \/>San Gabriel was pinned back inside its 10-yard line but Lucero bounced a pitch outside and took it 91-yards to paydirt to make it 8-0 after big Efren Torres took in the two point conversion.<br \/><br \/>The Oilers we\u2019re forced to punt again and what looked like San Gabriel calling a fair catch turned into a 70-yard punt return touchdown by Ivan Can making it 14-0 after a missed two point conversion.<br \/><br \/>Can wasn\u2019t done as a few plays later he picked off a Michael Valle pass and took it 35-yards to the end zone to make it 22-0 after another Torres two point conversion.<br \/><br \/>The Matadors weren\u2019t done in the first quarter. Torres scored from two yards out and Lucero hit the two point conversion putting it at 30-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.<br \/><br \/>After a Montebello fumble, its\u00a0 third straight possession with a turnover, Lucero scored for the second time of the night from six yards out to make it 36-0 one play into the second quarter.<br \/><br \/>San Gabriel then recovered an onside kick but turned the ball over on downs.<br \/><br \/>The Oilers didn\u2019t turn it into points instead threw their third interception of the night this time to Tijani Daley.<br \/><br \/>The Matadors converted the turnover into points with Lucero&#8217;s third score of the night a one yard dive making it 42-0.<br \/><br \/>Montebello got on the board late in the half with a six yard run by Enrique Hidalgo putting the score at 42-7 at half after the teams exchanged punts.<br \/><br \/>Both teams exchanged punts again to begin the second half and then the Oilers went to work, shutting down the Matadors offense.<br \/><br \/>Montebello scored twice in the third quarter on passes from Michael Valdivia to Bryant Murillo and Anthony Patel.<br \/><br \/>The score was 42-21 after three quarters of play.<br \/><br \/>After forcing three straight punts the Oilers forced a turnover on downs and turned it into points when Raul Gonzalez pounded it in from three yards out to make it 42-28 with eight minutes left.<br \/><br \/>Montebello got another punt and drove down field and fumbled it going into the end zone from five yards out.<br \/><br \/>San Gabriel went on to run out the clock.<br \/><br \/>Matadors quarterback Jacob Muniz went 6 of 10 for 111-yards. Lucero had 182-yards on 31-carries.<br \/><br \/>Valdivia, who went in after Valle\u2019s horrible start, went 18 for 24 for 250-yards and two touchdown passes and an interception.
