The Luker caught the All-Star Game last night and thought it was actually a good game for the most part.\u00a0David Ortiz\u2019s base running looked bad at the\u00a0end of the game, but I\u2019m actually surprised it doesn\u2019t happen more. That\u2019s a tough ball to read, he\u2019s not exactly fast and\u00a0Marlon Byrd\u00a0made a great play. Hey, it\u2019s not his fault he was left in the game to run.<\/p>\n

Last night showed that the whole, \u201cThis time it counts\u201d premise is bunk. If it counted, both managers wouldn\u2019t have been in such a hurry to empty their benches in the middle innings of the game. If this game counted, then\u00a0Albert Pujolswouldn\u2019t have been the first starter pulled. If this game counted,\u00a0Roy Halladay\u00a0would have been left in to finish the inning and face a lefty instead of being removed in favor of\u00a0Matt Capps, another right handed pitcher. Go ahead and empty the benches if the game is out of hand. Otherwise, play your best players if the game counts.<\/p>\n

Hey\u00a0Major League Baseball, do you know what else L-squared doesn\u2019t need? Forced emotional drivel. Yay, woohoo\u2026let\u2019s celebrate hometown heroes\u2026but let\u2019s do it 2 hours before the game and keep it off my TV. Look, these folks aren\u2019t doing community service to be put on a pedestal at a\u00a0baseball game\u00a0and I don\u2019t turn on a baseball game to watch these folks get put on a pedestal. It just looked awkward when the players broke from the baselines and were forced to mingle with the people. How excited was the soup kitchen operator from Peoria when Evan Meek waltzed over and struck up a conversation?<\/p>\n

Speaking of forced emotional drivel, what the heck is up with the over-the-top mourning of\u00a0George Steinbrenner? Unless you\u2019re a Yankee fan, this guy wasn\u2019t some beloved figure in the game. This guy was a convicted felon who was twice banned from baseball. He hired someone to dig up dirt on one of his own players,\u00a0Dave Winfield. He faked an injury during the \u201981\u00a0World Series, saying he had been attacked by Dodger fans in an elevator. I guess the media felt obliged to mourn, given that the Yankee-centered universe they created has kept them gainfully employed, but don\u2019t pretend this is some big loss to the baseball community outside of\u00a0the Bronx\u00a0.<\/p>\n

After graduating from Barstow College , Luke was signed as an undrafted\u00a0free agent\u00a0by the\u00a0New York Yankees, but released before\u00a0spring training\u00a0due to \u201cissues\u201d.
