\u00a0\u00a0As\u00a0it is seemingly every Tuesday night , It was another learning experience\u00a0last night on the Mid Valley Sports Show.\u00a0I learned that\u00a0Lydell McCullough’s middle name is Houston. Lydell Houston McCullough – sounds like an actor – or\u00a0 a lawyer.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 I also learned\u00a0that his Los Altos softball team is a little better\u00a0than we thought. With several Division 1 prospects in the lineup, the\u00a0Lady Conquerors\u00a0had a huge win over powerful Mater Dei\u00a0on Saturday and are poised to make a long playoff run.\u00a0Thursday they get Bonita in what should be a classic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 “I was told I inherited the best softball team ever at Los Altos,” McCullough said. “I’ll take it. ”<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0I learned\u00a0that San Marino football coach D.R. Moreland, \u00a0(another lawyer?), was inducted into the Menlo College Hall of Fame in 1997. Of course we would never have known that\u00a0unless\u00a0his wife didn’t tell us. \u00a0Moreland was too modest to mention it. Now you know.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0I learned that San Dimas Coach Bill Zernickow\u00a0played at the University\u00a0of LaVerne once upon a time.\u00a0So did Nick Lemas,\u00a0Brian Zavala and a couple of other coaches that have appeared on the show.\u00a0Who knew?<\/p>\n
\u00a0 San Dimas has added Monrovia to its non league schedule because as Zernickow said “Monrovia might be ranked number one in the Mid Valley heading into the season. ”\u00a0Can’t wait for that one.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Am I the only one that is worried about\u00a0Andrew Bynum?\u00a0 he looked lost against the Jazz and Yao Ming could be next on the agenda. Can Pau\u00a0Gasol\u00a0handle\u00a0the middle by himself? \u00a0Doesn’t seem likely.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Fomer heavywight Greg Page died over the weekend at the age of 5o.\u00a0Page sufferred a severe brain injury during a fight in 2001 and never fully recovered.\u00a0\u00a0Page fought in the heavyweight division when it was still relevant.\u00a0He lost a WBA title bout\u00a0to Tim Witherspoon in 1984 but claimed the championship in December of that same year with a win over\u00a0Gerrie Coetzee.\u00a0Page,\u00a0a Louisville Kentucky native,\u00a0was a sparring partner of Muhammad Ali at the age of 15.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 Also longtime sports writer Bob Oates, who covered 39 consecutive Super Bowls, passed away Monday at the age of 93.<\/p>\n
\u00a0 I still think Chicago\u00a0will beat Boston but the Blazers are done.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u00a0While everybody was focusing on the first month of the baseball season\u00a0and the NBA playoffs the Ducks, seeded eighth in the NHL playoffs quietly\u00a0knocked off the top seeded San Jose Sharks in six games in the first round.\u00a0Does anybody care? Probably not.<\/p>\n
