Billy Livingston hit Venegas on a five yard scoring pass with 3:20 remaining in the fourth and it was 21-15. West Covina was still in control but then disaster struck for the Bulldogs. Randy Robledo recovered an onside kick at the 50 to put Covina back in business.

Four plays later, Livingston fired a strike to Peter de la Cruz in the back of the endzone to tie it at 21 with 1:46 left. All that was left was a Robledo extra point for a 22-21 lead. Instead Covina Coach Darryl Thomas went for two. West Covina was not fooled as the ball was snapped to the holder who thought about throwing it. But the Bulldogs swarmed him and sunffed it leaving the game tied at 21.

“You would have to bring that up,” Thomas said after the game. “Well we had missed an extra point earlier and I thought maybe we could get two there. But it turned out to be a bad call. It was my call.”

Hynes then bailed out his coach with the interception and the Colts held on to win it.

Livingston threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson threw three interceptions for West Covina but rushed for 94 yards including a 57 yard TD romp that put the WC up 7-0 in the first.

West Covina went up 14-0 on a 17 yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Aaron Salgado. The Bulldogs had a chance to go up by three scores but fumbled the ball at the one yard line on a missed snap in the second quarter. That miscue proved to be costly later.

After a bad snap on a punt attempt turned into a safety for Covina, Charles Tucker scored on a one yard run to make it 21-2 West Covina in the third quarter. But the Colts then mounted their comeback.

“We battled hard and actually we expect to win.
