{"id":879,"date":"2009-05-02T22:59:22","date_gmt":"2009-05-03T05:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=879"},"modified":"2009-05-03T00:04:16","modified_gmt":"2009-05-03T07:04:16","slug":"former-nfl-qb-congressman-kemp-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?p=879","title":{"rendered":"Former NFL QB, Congressman Kemp Dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 <!--more--><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-880\" href=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/?attachment_id=880\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-880\" title=\"espn_g_kemp02_300\" src=\"http:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/espn_g_kemp02_300.jpg\" alt=\"espn_g_kemp02_300\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Jack Kemp, former\u00a0quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, congressman\u00a0and one-time vice presedential nominee\u00a0died Saturday of cancer at the age of 73.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Kemp, who was a 17th round draft choice of the Detroit Lions in1957, bounced around the NFL and the Canadian Football League for the next few years before landing with\u00a0the Bills in\u00a01962. Kemp led Buffalo\u00a0to\u00a0NFL Championships in 1964 and 1965 and won the league&#8217;s MVP\u00a0award in &#8217;65.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Kemp retired from\u00a0football in 1969 and won an open congressional seat in Buffalo. He served as\u00a0a congressman for nine terms in western New York.\u00a0 He left the House in\u00a01988\u00a0for an unsuccessful presedential bid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Eight years later after serving a term as President George H.W.\u00a0Bush&#8217;s housing secretary, he made it on to the national\u00a0ticket as Bob Dole&#8217;s running mate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Kemp, born in Los Angeles,\u00a0attended Fairfax High School and Occidental College.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Kemp passed away at his home in Bethesda, Maryland\u00a0shortly after 6 p.m surrounded by his wife Joanne and family.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-879","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/879","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=879"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/879\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":887,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/879\/revisions\/887"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=879"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=879"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/midvalleysports.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=879"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
