(Baldwin Park) – Sierra Vista got a lucky break and squeezed by Mountain View 10-7. Dons running back Giovanni Rivera ran the ball 41 times for 204 yards Friday night at Sierra Vista High School.
\nThe Vikings took the lead on their second possession when they drove the ball down field and quarterback Jason Cordero took it in from 1-yard out to make it 7-0 after the extra point, early in the second quarter.<\/p>\n
The Dons came right back when Rivera carried them down field and Erik Perez found David Flores for a 19-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 7-7 midway through the second quarter.<\/p>\n
Mountain View drove the ball again into position for a field goal. Its first try for a field goal was blocked and ran back for a touchdown, but a inadvertent whistle called it back and View got shot at the field goal but missed.<\/p>\n
The Vikings and Dons both moved the ball but neither could cash in. Late in the fourth quarter Sierra Vista had the ball on the 25-yard line with 55 seconds left and went for a field goal on fourth down. The attempt was missed but a penalty was called on View for roughing the kicker. The Dons got the ball in the 16-yard line but were stopped on three straight plays before hitting a field goal with 11 seconds left to make it 10-7.<\/p>\n
Mountain View got the ball back with five seconds left, Cordero completed a pass to Cesar Yerena. Vikings looked like they got a timeout with one second left but it wasn’t called and Sierra Vista came out with the\u00a0win.<\/p>\n
View got 90-yards on 18-carries from Josymar Ulloa, and sophomore Jose “Nacho” Zamora had 51-yards on only eight carries. The Vikings defense stepped up when they needed to. Vargas Humberto, Yerena, and Rafael Del Real each had a sack and Jerry Ponce went 1 of 1 for 25-yards from the quarterback position. He also had 25-yards rushing and a big fumble recovery on defense.<\/p>\n
