(Arcadia) – Rio Hondo jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three innings and rolled to a 14-1 rout of Beacon Hill Thursday in the first round of the Division 8 CIF playoffs. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Kares got two in second inning. Nic Harrington was hit by a pitch and Julian Rodriguez and Calogero Chico walked to load the bases. Harrington then scored on a ground ball by Yanick Diaz and Chico worked his way around and came home on a wild pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rio Hondo then broke it wide open in the third with seven runs. Rodriguez hit a two-run double that plated Landon Scott and Devn Gomez, who had both singled. Harrington drew a walk and scored on a ground out by Benicio Tardino. After walks to Diaz and Easton Jara loaded the bases Brayden Vinton cleared them with a double to left. Vinton then scored on an error on a fly ball by Scott. By the time the third out was mercifully recorded the Kares were up nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kares moved into double digits as they added five more in the fourth. Freshman Matt Montez capped a five-run inning with a two-run shot to left. Vinton also had a two-run double earlier in the inning and scored himself on a ground ball. Rio was up two touchdowns, 14-0, after four innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mercy Rule, which is typically invoked if a team is up by at least 10 runs after five innings, is not in effect in the playoffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beacon Hill broke through in the seventh when Rowand Salazar singled, stole second, took third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nathan Harwood started on the mound for the Kares and pitched four scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out seven. Rio Hondo Prep pitchers allowed just four hits overall. Abhi Patel, Emiliano Orozco and Tardino all came on to pitch one inning each to finish the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kares, 10-9-1 overall, now move on to the second round. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
