(Inglewood) – The Chargers fell behind 20-3 at halftime and could never recover in a 41-17 loss to San Francisco Thursday night in a preseason game at SoFi Stadium. <\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

The Chargers cut the lead to 20-9 in the third quarter but the 49ers answered with three straight touchdowns including two scores in less than a minute early in the fourth quarter to put it away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justin Herbert started for the Chargers and they went three and out in the first series. Trey Lance relieved Herbert on the next series. Brock Purdy started for San Francisco and he was also replaced after one series when Mac Jones came on. Neither team scored in the first quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eddy Pinero kicked a 48-yard field on the first play of the second quarter to put the 49ers up 3-0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 37-yard run by Lance down to the San Francisco five-yard line set up the Chargers first score. The Chargers drive stalled there but Cameron Dicker kicked a 21-yard field goal to tie it at three with 7:11 left in the second quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 49ers responded with a four-play, 65-yard drive that Sincere McCormick finished with a seven-yard touchdown run to put San Francisco back up 10-3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After forcing the Chargers to punt, Jacob Cowing returned the boot 83-yards for a touchdown to put the 49ers up 17-3 with 3:01 left in the second quarter. Cowing broke to the outside, turned on the burners and outran the Chargers coverage for the score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the Chargers offense failed to move the ball again the 49ers scored one more time in the second quarter. Pinero booted a 45-yard field goal as time ran out make it 20-3 at the half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adrian Martinez took over at quarterback for San Francisco to start the third quarter and DJ Uiagalelei came in for Lance to open the quarter as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On San Francisco’s second possession of the second half Junior Colson stepped in front of a Martinez pass and returned it 16 yards for a score. Dicker missed the extra point leaving the score 20-9 with 10:45 left in the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chargers seemed to be back in it but instead it was all Niners from there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the next series the 49ers marched 74 yards on 14 plays. Khalil Herbert went over from the one-yard line to cap the drive and increase the lead to 27-9 with 3:46 left in the third quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chargers were stopped on fourth down early in the fourth quarter and the 49ers immediately took advantage. They went 30 yards on seven plays with Martinez scrambling in on a nine-yard run to finish the drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chargers fumbled the ensuing kickoff and two plays later Martinez hit Jordan Watkins on a 17-yard touchdown pass to make it 41-9 as the rout was officially on with 12:54 left in the fourth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chargers scored late in the fourth when Uiagalelei hit Jerand Bradley on a 28-yard touchdown pass. They added a two point conversion on a Uiagalelei pass to Evan Svoboda for the final tally with 1:03 left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 49ers then closed out the 41-17 victory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Chargers they produced just 68 yards on the ground. Lance led the way with 42 yards on two carries. They had 161 yards passing with Uiagalelei going 7 of 15 for 80 yards and a touchdown and Lance completing 10 of 16 for 73. Omarion Hampton, who is expected to be the Chargers primary back, played just one series and had one carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 49ers had 175 yards passing with Mac Jones throwing for 89 yards on six completions. McCormick led the rushing attack with 53 yards and a score. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chargers dropped to 1-1 on the preseason with the loss while San Francisco improved to 1-1. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
