Coach James Heggins has scheduled up and the Braves should be better for it down the line. They have another tough one this week in Bonita.

Bonita survived Santa Fe last week to stay undefeated. Greg Spathias has done a great job filling in for Garrett Pendleton. Bonita wins it in late.

Bonita 21 Baldwin Park 17

***

Crescenta Valley (1-1) at La Canada (2-0)

Last Year: Crescenta Valley 38-35

It’s usually a high scoring affair. But this year CV could have trouble lighting it up against the LC defense. The Spartans have allowed an average of just over 8 points per game.

The Spartan offense exploded last week against Glendale. Scott Gray and Daleep Sandhu don’t just have football talent. They have football smarts.

La Canada holds off the Falcons

La Canada 30 Crescenta Valley 21

***

El Rancho (2-1) at Montebello (0-3)

Last Year: El Rancho 42-7

El Rancho has been Jekyll and Hyde so far this year. The Dons routed Los Altos but then edged Northview before falling to Bell Gardens.

Montebello is 0-3 but a break against Arroyo and a stop against Rosemead and the Oilers are 2-1. Lashawn Howard is a good back who is dangerous in space. Montebello’s defense under Jerry Chou has been playing well.

That being said, the Oilers will have to wait to get a win. El Rancho squeaks by. Montebello looses its fourth consecutive tight game.

El Rancho 20 Montebello 17

***

Hart (2-1) at Arroyo (3-0)

Facing Hart anytime would be a rough assignment. Facing them without your starting quarterback might be too much to ask. Eddie Federico threw a couple of touchdown passes in place of the injured Steven Rivera last week to rally the Knights to a victory but Montebello isn’t Hart.

Hart has won two of its first three including a 27-10 win over Burbank Burroughs last week. It might not be a rout but it would be a lot closer if Rivera was healthy.

Hart 31 Arroyo 10

***

La Puente (2-0) at Wilson (1-1)

Both teams are coming off big victories. While Wilson was winning the wheel against Los Altos La Puente was smashing Northview.

The Wildcats can run it but as Coach Brian Zavala pointed out after the game, they can go over the top as well. LP has a solid running attack led by Jose Perez but they need to shore up the defense to have a shot at Wilson. The Warriors allowed 27 to El Monte in week one.

Wilson gets the W.

Wilson 28 La Puente 14

***

Monrovia (1-1) at San Dimas (1-2)

Last Year: 9-25-09: Monrovia 36 San Dimas 17, 12-12-09: San Dimas 12 Monrovia 7 CIF Mid-Valley Championship

This has to be the game of the week. For the third time in a year Monrovia and San Dimas face off. The Wildcats won big last September, but the Saints won the one that counted in December.

Monrovia’s Nick Bueno ran wild against Arcadia last week. San Dimas lost big in the opener and then won big against South. Last week’s loss to Rancho Cucamonga was the dreaded “moral victory.”

The bottom line for the Saints is if they can stop Bueno they can win. I don’t think they can. The Titans have outscored their first two opponents 83-6 but didn’t they do exactly what they should have? The Titans suffered a big blow when running back Kwame Do tore his ACL and may be done for the year. Ryan Wood or Morgan Myers will get the bulk of the carries.

Things just snowballed on Rosemead against Rowland. The Panthers like to pound it with Matt Fregoso and try to control the ball.

With both teams staying on the ground it could be a fast game.
