The TEN

(“The TEN” is not a top ten but ten items worth being included in “The TEN”)

1.)—“So, I felt like I did well because I got 100% on all eight questions that they asked me. So, I’m proud of myself because of that, not too much about the home run or the World Series that I have or the rings that I have. So, there’s things in life that are bigger than just baseball.”—Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas after becoming an American citizen.

2.)—“I’ll be first to commend these talented receivers, but there is an unseen and seldom appreciated set of abilities that go a very long way toward winning football games. I’m speaking, or course, about blocking and tackling. I’d even go so far as to say that all really good football teams block and tackle like demons; this is the game boiled down to its essence. Want to know, for example, why USC under Riley is so lack-luster and why UCLA under Chesney is on the rise? Look at the emphasis each man places on blocking and tackling…end of discussion.”—MVS commenter, “The Fundamentals”

3.)—Dodgers clinch the NLDS over the Braves. Los Angeles won 4-1 in Atlanta. Andy Pages delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single in the seventh. The Dodgers get extra rest before the NLCS against Milwaukee.

4.)—“Nobody who ever gave his best regretted it.”—George Halas

5.)—Philadelphia Eagles trade center Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens receive Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round pick. In return Philly receives a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick.

6.)—Brewers eliminate the Padres, set up an NLCS rematch with the Dodgers. Milwaukee won 3-1 in San Diego (series 3-1). Garrett Mitchell tripled and scored the go-ahead run; Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 429-foot homer only briefly tied it. The 103-win Brewers advance.

7.)—9. On this day in 2011 Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis passes away at the age of 82.

8.)—On this date in 2018: Brock Holt of the Boston Red Sox hit the first cycle in postseason history in a 16–1 ALDS win over the Yankees.

9.)—Since the Indiana Fever lost Game 3 to the Las Vegas in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

Comparing Fever–Aces Game 1 (2.11 million) to the semifinal openers, viewership is down to about 44–47%. Compared with the Fever-Aces series average (~1.93 million), the drop is roughly 40%. Compared with Game 3 alone (2.25 million), it is about 49%.

10.)—On this date in 1956: Don Larsen of the New York Yankees threw the only perfect game in World Series (and postseason) history, a 2–0 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium. He retired all 27 batters. The Yankees won the series in seven.
