Heck even big bad Alabama schedules a Little Sisters of the poor team every season. Sometimes two teams. They show up and sometimes an Alabama player gets hurt. Most times though the players love the game. I know ER had a few players banged up as well. With the NFL tossing people out of games for clean hard tackles your hope of football being gone is probably going to come true.

The Cantwell situation is symptomatic of a bigger issue that most of the lower level Catholic schools are dealing with ie Salesian, Bosco Tech, Verbum Dei as opposed to the wealthier (seemingly independent run) Catholic schools ie Cathedral, John Bosco, Mater Dei etc.

The archdiocese is in a dire financial situation due to the ongoing priest scandals. These lower level schools are pressured by the archdiocese to bring in a specific dollar amount based on enrollment therefore financial assistance or scholarships for athletes are not there.

The wealthier schools which are seemingly independent fall back on a strong alumni base, Booster club money, host families etc to support a strong athletic department.

Under the previous admin Cantwell was supporting an above average athletic department (specifically baseball and basketball) typical of the above schools mentioned. The current admin was pressured by the archdiocese to account for every student and dollar therefore you’ve seen the exodus of coaches as well as high end athletes as the current admin bowed down to the archdiocese.

Call it what you want but part of the catholic faith is assisting the underprivileged. Most of these athletes were given an opportunity to attend a catholic school based on that tenant. For all the complaining about Catholic schools dominating the high school sports scene remember there are many more Cantwell’s, St Monica’s, Mary Star of the Sea’s out there than John Bosco’s and Mater Dei’s.

If the rules allow you to change your mind and preserve the tie, then the rules allow it. It’s still totally shady, as the previous agreement quite possibly affected strategy. However, the rules should not permit take-backsies. Agree to it or don’t (and personally, I think OT in a non-playoff game is a bit silly – if you can’t win in four quarters., maybe you don’t deserve a win at all), but the rule should be that the decision is final.

My two cents is the guy in every conversation being condescending and talking down to people while knowing absolutely nothing about what he is talking about. Just because you have too much time on your hands does not give you football insight. Taking odds now on the fact that he’s never played a snap in his life. Keep the change son.

Lancers626, don’t be bitter, I asked a question based on a rumor I heard. I’m a St Gens fan, just looking to see why a league opponent has dropped so badly. In reality it would have been better if the reason they got whooped was because they were missing guys. IMO getting rocked by a -28.2 doesn’t mean “the coaching staff has done a great job!” but I guess we measure what a “great job” is differently. Of course “it was one of the better games for LaSalle this year”, Valley doesn’t come close to any of their other opponents.

Why are spectators so surprised by hobbie. he didn’t want to have 2 losses on the record after beating up on weaker teams this. Facts are those were soccer teams with pads on. When he did schedule a tough opponent Northview look what happened, got smoked. I guess he thought he’d sneak a win against the Vikings in the post comstock era without realizing Northview reloads. lol
Failing to finish out the game in OT after agreeing before game time is completely unethical – bad karma

@ ?, I’m sure the kid that got hurt on Friday and the others that are real banged up are real happy their school hasn’t pulled the plug. At some point adults have to make adult decisions and sending these kids back out there is like sending the sheep to the slaughter but what do you expect from adults that got no clue. You get what you pay for. Sad situation.

Football is a game of strategy, whether or not to play OT is part of it. Coach Hobbie probably saw that his team didn’t have the momentum after Newport scored the tying touchdown and changed his mind about playing OT. That’s absolutely within his right and CIF rule. Why would he have to forfeit? LOL!

@Anony LOL…Yup. I’ve never heard of a coach changing his mind at the end of the game. In his interview, Hobbie cited that a few of his starters were injured in the 4th quarter. After looking up Newport’ s roster, their quarterback and running back that started were both sophomores. Their leading receiver was a junior. Either Newport has some guys out too or they are a super young team. I can’t believe Hobbie would pull that. I wonder if Newport would have went for two for the win if they knew the game wasn’t going to overtime? #unethical #lowclass

Anonymous, if true that both coaches agreed to OT prior to kickoff, but then one decides to back away from OT agreement, I believe such act should warrant a forfeit loss. Sounds to me that Newport had all the momentum going into OT…

Boneyard Sounds like your the one making the rumor or had a kid leave the program!!! no protest, all players on La Salle Varsity we’re at the game Friday night. It was one of the better game for La Salle tihs year. Down early 28 -6 and fought back to 28-20 and than losing 38-20. Not sure you would call it a spanking! After all the players that transferred out and very young team. The coaching staff has done a great job! La Salle will be okay.

From the info I’m getting, both coaches were asked about overtime prior to the start of the game. The Newport coach stated he wanted to go to overtime prior to the opening kickoff. At that point, overtime was determined. Newport tied the game with 16 seconds left and at that moment, Hobbie decided he no longer wanted to go to overtime. This appears to be confirmed in Hobbie’s post game interview. Pretty weak if you ask me and even a bit unethical. What are they teaching those kids?

@Football Dude, league or non-league, OT is only played if BOTH coaches agreed to play. That’s normally determined during the pregame meeting with the crew chief but the coaches do have up till the end of regulation to change their minds.

The coach had no problem playing his kids for 4 quarters of football and over 150 snaps on both sides of the ball but suddenly he don’t want to play eight more snaps to win a game outright due to injury concerns? #NoGutsNoGlory

@CA: I am guessing that is what happens when you base your athletic programs on supposed star recruits that are focused solely on themselves. If the grass seems greener somewhere else they leave. You see that happening all over at parochial schools. At least Cantwell did not pull a Whittier Christian and forfeit but played it out. Go to 8 or 6 man football and have a little fun. That for sure will weed out the super stars.

Out of respect for readers’ time, I won’t argue that there is any difference between divisions 11-13, so that if Pioneer were to hoist hardware in 11, it would still be a stepping-stone along the hard path back to relevance in the Whittier area. As I say, we should all wish the Titan organization God’s speed in reclaiming their spot as the Del Rio #6.
