As an Amat alum, I’m hoping they fall to D2 and win it all. It would be such a boost for the program as a whole. Constantly winning league just to get dragged by the MD and SJB of the world is getting old. They need a ring to bring their name back.

People don’t understand that the demographics have changed at Alhambra high it has become more Asian less Hispanic and African-American. Not many Asian kids play football and if they do there just learning how to play and haven’t played youth football. Also not sure if they have brought back the Thunderbird youth program that would feed Alhambra kids.

@ron nobody plays to lose but the issue with Pete at Montebello is that he has made it a family affair at Montebello and there is some of the fan base that doesn’t like this and wants him out as coach. Pete’s son is OC and apparently being groomed to take over after Pete decides to leave and some don’t think his a good coach

Peterson had it right on this one…Cal had their moments versus La Serna, but ultimately the team with the most horses won the race. Those horses come from the entire Del Rio attendance area, and they come on the heels of a thing called open enrollment, which tells families that their sons and daughters can join the rich kids on the hill, presumably to get a better education. Until this situation changes, we can look forward to La Serna’s dominance in practically every category.

Also SEM loss was massive in terms of playoffs they probably miss out and that’s a big deal given on how weak the league is this year. Massive coaching failure!

@ Anon: I can guarantee that Montebello was playing to win last night. The score was tied at 27-all in the fourth quarter, but Alhambra outplayed the Oilers in the closing minutes to win the game.
In addition, why would a team that was already 0-2 in league deliberately tank? You have to qualify for the playoffs first in order to get into a playoff division.
I also don’t think that the San Gabriel Matadors would spoil their perfect regular season by taking an intentional 35-0 dump against Bell Gardens. An ugly loss like that isn’t a good way to set up for a playoff run.

Lol! The peanut gallery has arrived! It’s only taken about 10 years for any other team in the Almont to be relevant. Give me a break. All the teams in the Almont are soft. Including my Montebello. As for blaming the coaching staff? I don’t get it. It happens to all the area teams except La Serna. Every team will have down years. This year is Montebello. But who cares? Only the clowns that have been waiting to say something. Get real…

I get the frustration with Pete but he has stabilized the program before him we were underachievers. No coach is perfect but he has done a good job overall. But like with everything there is a shelf life and maybe Pete’s time has come been at Montebello for I think 10 years now.

@ Not RV: I like the humorous touch there, but I would never make that kind of a brash prediction. We play the games one at a time, and we’ll give it our best shot every week.
Two more wins would definitely put us in the playoffs, but that’s looking too far ahead. We have to win at San Gabriel first.

@ Anonymous & Joe: Schurr is now by itself at the top of the Almont League standings, and the Spartans have the clearest path to the league title. Alhambra, Bell Gardens, and San Gabriel are in a three-way tie for second place.
It’s usually a mistake to underestimate or disregard the Schurr Spartans.

@ Biggest Shock: You might get a few points for using colorful language, but your comment would’ve made a lot more sense two years ago.
In my opinion, Alhambra’s 55-48 win on the road against a tough Montebello team in 2019 has been the closest thing to a signature win for Coach Bergstrom. That hard-fought victory enabled us to win out and take the Almont League title that year.
We hope the best is yet to come.

As we look forward to next week’s Warren vs Downey and ER vs La Serna games, we have to ask the odd question: what’s more important, local bragging rights…or a CIF ring? The winner of these two games will face tougher competition in the playoffs as a penalty for winning local bragging rights, and that could mean an early playoff exit, with no hardware to show the grandkids twenty years from now.

Those who insist that coaches and players would never knowingly throw a game are missing the point. In the back of each player’s mind is the thought that they’re going to the playoffs anyway, and that there’s an UPSIDE to losing. It’s there in their heads, and the fans know it too. Also, why risk injury in a hard-fought local game, when a rested, healthy roster is needed in the playoffs?

Simply put, winning this local skirmish at the cost of injury and playoff penalty doesn’t make sense in the big picture. Tanking, consciously or not, keeps these teams on track to claim the big prize.

In a game they were favored to win, the Mats of San Gabriel let hapless Bell Gardens rip them a new one, 35-0. The good news is that Vrooman will soon appear, telling us how Alhambra’s win over awful Montebello is a signature win for Bergstrom. In years past, beating Montebello gave the victor a leg-up on the league title…this year, it’s a fart in a whirlwind.

Get that South coach out of there couldn’t even beat a JV EM team. Guy will have some kind of excuse I remember two years ago his kids wanted to go trick or treating week 10 sp just to cancel the game. Gtfoh with that.

Here comes all the ER talking about how LS only beat Cal by so much when they beat th by more. Don’t give LS no fuel to run it up next week just talk nice this week.

Rosemead with there three play coach gets torched. Just like I knew they would. Hopefully nobody spoke bad in the stands or mama in law will post how mean they are.

MV gots to learn how to win. They had that game against Gabrielino and instead of their RB running out of bounds he runs in and fumbles. But then you got Gabrielino and their coaches celebrating like they just won CIF comes on guys.

Warren and Downey next week is going to be crazy! Warren I could see being the favorite but damn it’s going to be fire works.

Amat loses to a team that’s their level and got hammering their chest after beating yearly D4 schools like La Habra and Damien. They’re fall to D2 or D3 they’ll have a great show at a ring.

Charter Oak is one year away, but could still be a big threat in this years playoffs.

    South Hills! Wow!

SG might just blow it and miss the playoffs

SV not wanting to play this week but their HC another game. Should be coaching up your kids.

BP hasn’t played a murderers role but if they get ranked anywhere from D11 to D14 they’ll make a run, same thing goes for Arroyo. I’d love to see that match up.

A Monrovia vs SP playoff game would be exciting.

How do you manipulate your team to keep the pedal to the metal to sore on your last possession in the waning moments of a running clock out of hand game?

Easy, you tell them they are about to set a scoring record for their school. However to do so they would have had to score a 21 point touchdown in their last possession to tie their scoring record..
