As wild and satirical as your suggestion might sound , there’s a lot of people who would say this is a good idea ….

Those teams that don’t make playoffs go to HSBS High School Bowl Series and square off vs closest rival as determined by CalPreps. Everyone gets at least one more game and CIF
gets 60 more “winners” . Everyone has
“something to play for” at seasons end. Coaches
save their jobs with bowl victories and everyone is happy .!
    This could happen

Let’s play the Belmont vs West Adams game at coliseum. How much are tickets ???

Give every team 1 bowl game. You play the closest ranked team. This year L.A.Belmont -92 rated would play -90 West Adams. Every body gets a bowl game and a trophy.

So that means 60% of teams make playoffs

    218/373

    6% of those are Champs

CIF wants more winners . Don’t forget two 8-man champs as well. Go Chadwick!!
These are complex issues . I’m not against more winners but the quantity impacts the quality and that get lost in the confetti under CIF banner

Those crying for inclusion of everyone and his little brother are actually urging us to water-down the value of all football banners hanging in school gyms, including the ones from decades ago. Enough with this endless congratulation of everyone…make winning more difficult and challenge the kids to aim higher.

    @New Classification,

There are 373 schools that play 11-man football in the CIF Southern Section. That is more schools than over 3 quarters of the rest of the states in the country. There are 14 teams who can cal themselves CIF champions. 14 out of 373. That’s hardly handing out trophies.

To state the obvious, high school football has evolved into two camps: the teams that are loaded and the teams that have leftovers. It’s not hard for the major rating organizations such as Maxpreps and Calpreps to figure out which is which. It’s not hard for the average keyboard warriors on this site to do the same.

My view is that, among the elites, there are two categories: the super elite (what would be CIF divisions 1 and 2) and the knocking on the door elites (divisions 3, 4 and 5). We need to cut the crap and form just two divisions out of all these programs. Call them Elite 1 and Elite 2.

Next down the ladder, we have the vast group of teams who are up to their necks in decent-to marginal players. So we make two divisions out of this bunch of football ballast, calling them Leftovers 1 and Leftovers 2.

What would this accomplish? It would take CIF back to its original state of having only four playoff divisions. It would recognize the truth of how things really are, not how some people try to spin them.
Most importantly, it would make a CIF championship meaningful, not just one of 14 awards given out like so much candy.

It’s pretty clear a lot of commenters don’t know anything about what goes on at La Serna. If you think there is recruiting/poaching going on, you’d be sorely mistaken. Any transfer that has shown up has done so on their own.

And as for the kids who live in the other district schools’ jurisdiction, let’s be honest with ourselves. If it was your kid, would you be lining up to send them to one of the other DRL schools? The head coach positions are just revolving doors. No consistency anywhere. Why would you sign your kid up for that?

Just give the kids the respect they deserve, tip your cap, and get to prepping for your D19 playoff run next season. Congrats to the champs.

There are some problems with CalPreps ratings. They cap victory margin at 30 points , so as to not give credit to teams for running up scores . The margin between LaSerna and Del Rio foes is 40-60 points , so their rating for those games is capped at a low number . This in effect La Serna is rated off their nonleague ( and pre-transfer eligible) performance thus placing them in lower division,
I love CalPreps , but ratings were not created for the purpose CIF using them for

What is CIF seeing that the rest of us aren’t? La Serna, with the exception of the 3 games lost (which they competed well into the 3rd/4th quarters), demolished their season scheduled “competition”. Yet, instead of appropriately slotting them in D3, they dropped them to D4.
Once CIF did this, we all saw it coming…the Lancers made the D4 playoffs look like just a step, maybe 2, above their Del Rio league schedule. And now the Southern Section 17th ranked (most updated) Lancers, instead of facing a formidable opponent in St. Bonaventure (ranked 18th) for the Division 1-A Regionals, will face off against a 33rd ranked Orange Vista team having been slotted for the D2-AA Regionals.
Would like to wish LS best of luck on Friday, but there really is no need. The Lancers might as well submit their 2nd ring design to Jostens. What a treat for the La Serna community, which consists of not just the Friendly Hills, but all of Whittier, and parts of: La Mirada, La Habra, Hacienda Heights, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Santa Fe, and from what I read recently on someone’s post, as far as Inland Empire/Hawaii!! Congratulations to all!!!!

We all keep forgetting what a CIF Championship win does for many of our students and the community it belongs too! This CIF Championship was long awaited by BGHS 26 years to be exact! since it last played in a FINAL. It was the same BG team that lost earlier in the season to Schurr in a poor performance , but sometimes you need that kind of loss to create and trigger a reality check for the team. THE BG team huddled around coaches on campus who reminded them that this was a new season the CIF Playoffs and they were challenged to look at each game with a goal in mind to WIN! I know I am a teacher of 23 years at BGHS and have many of the Football players in my classes and even have my door open having lunch visits and conversations with some of the players. The CIF Playoffs have somehow transformed the same BG Team and players from the regular season to play with intensity and motivation. Each week the players were focused on each game and listened to CHALK TALKS given by coaches to focus only on preparing and winning each game against each opponent.BG was not picked to win any of the playoff games in fact MVS picked Ocean View, Artesia(#1 seed) and Lynwood to beat BG, La Puente was a coin flip choice? The BG Players Thrived on this knowing they were the underdogs in each game. The turning point was the Ocean View game away down 14-0 in the 2nd Quarter BG scored 28 unanswered points and created turnovers late in that game to win 28-21. This win I believe gave confidence to the BG Team to win the CIF Title! They were reminded at each PEP Rally on campus NOT TO TAKE ANY TEAM FOR GRANTED! I agree this was a NEW BG TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS with the same players with a NEW MOTIVATING MIND SET. I have never seen anything like this at BGHS in my 23 years of teaching on campus. The BG Football Alumni(hundreds) made its presence known at each playoff game many standing in back of the sidelines reminding the team each win was for EVERYONE AT BG!. I spoke to former BG Alumni and my student in the classroom Jimmy Do the QB who lead BG to the semifinals in 2002 only to lose a heartbreaking game that season he was there to support BG! Lynwood made the mistake of going to YOUTUBE after the CIF Luncheon last Wednesday and posted a video with 4 players The Championship game was going to be an EASY WIN OVER BG.! That’s all BG needed to come out and score on the first series to lead 8-0! Leading 21-14 in the 4th quarter when the the final touchdown was scored with only a few minutes remaining MAKING THE SCORE 27-16, The BG Team and Community knew the CIF CHAMPIONSHIP was moments away! The celebration started when the clock expired and Players, Coaches, Parents, Students, teachers including myself embraced the victory with TEARS of Joy crying Together.! When the CIF Trophy was handed to second year coach Hector Novoa, without hesitation he handed the TROPHY to his Coach Dave Newhell who attended the game, in tears he lifted the CIF Trophy Championship the DNA OF BG FOOTBALL! All the hard work all these years had paid off! This win was for the entire BG Football Alumni and the BG Family! and has transform the BG players that anything is possible if you BELIEVE! I covered all the league games and CIF playoff games for BG and know this CIF Title has brought so much POSITIVE IMPACT to the entire Bell Gardens Community! 10, 450 followers on MAXPREPS LIVE last Friday is just one example! and the Standing room only Crowd that celebrated the CIF WIN! And the Journey continues with The CIF Southern State Regionals next week. I speak daily to the players in my classroom as a TEACHER and knew 4 weeks ago we had something special that was transforming at BGHS for the playoffs. That’s the insights that MVS and media and outsiders do not know about a team! The BG FIRST FOOTBALL CIF Championship was the best THANKSGIVING for the entire BG Family! BG gives thanks to those who did BELIEVE!
