Just from a distance , and just looking at stats I’m concerned about development of QB who is now a 3 year starter . This should be bust out year for him! Or is there just an absence of weapons ?
@Happy camper
why so crappy? you could not coach crappy?
Forget the defense they have to put more than 7 points on a sorry Bassett team.
@ A-Town & ShutTheNation: I believe that the current Alhambra team has the potential to improve significantly on last year’s 1-9 record, but that outcome will require a great deal of commitment and hard work during the course of the season.
Our passing game got noticeably better during the second half against El Monte, as quarterback Bryan Leonard completed nine of 17 passes after a two-for-11 start. Our receivers are actually doing fairly well at this point, with only two or three drops of catchable balls in each of our first two games. (The situation was far worse during the first half of last season!)
However, we have to run the ball far better to make it all work. Our defense has generally been OK; it has had only a couple of bad quarters even though the offense hasn’t been productive so far.
El Monte and South El Monte both appear to be pretty good teams. El Monte is running the ball better right now, and South El Monte has a better passing attack. Both teams look to be good on defense. I agree with the others here who believe that they’ll be facing off for the Mission Valley League title later on.
@ Anonymous (the one talking about Alhambra High and local youth teams): One of the main issues that we’ve faced in trying to develop a quality football program has been the lack of a youth team in the city. The Alhambra Thunderbirds folded a good decade ago, and no team has risen yet to replace them.
We’ve had some guys come up to our program through the El Sereno Stallions, but the bulk of our players in recent years never played tackle football before enrolling at AHS. The coaching staff is literally teaching 13-and-14-year-olds (and sometimes older athletes) the fundamentals in all aspects of the sport. We’ve been starting at least a step or two behind nearly everyone else when it comes to player development.
For anyone on our staff to recruit players from youth teams in other cities might be problematic, but I’m not privy to whatever rules apply there. We have open enrollment in Alhambra Unified, so we would welcome anyone who chooses to come to AHS. We have a good academic program, but, as I just stated a while ago, our facilities are certainly not an inducement. However, we hope that will change in the near future.
@ Anonymous: At least some of us who work at Alhambra High are trying to put athletics, along with other extracurricular activities, right behind academics as an important priority.
I think much of the blame lays with the school board and the AUSD administration, which seem to have proceeded with a deliberate policy of showcasing San Gabriel and Mark Keppel High Schools at Alhambra’s expense.
The athletic facilities at San Gabriel are mostly top-notch, and those at Keppel are also pretty good, with Aztec Arena and a stadium that has been upgraded. (The Aztecs could really use an artificial track, though.) The classroom buildings at both schools are in anywhere from decent to excellent condition.
On the other hand, the AHS campus and the football facility at Moor Field have been largely neglected for decades.
The renovation of the two oldest classroom buildings (A and B Buildings) has seemingly taken forever and is nowhere near completion. The gymnasium and the boys’ locker room building (where I saw large cockroaches on Thursday night) need to be refurbished and repainted since the district has chosen not to replace them.
In addition, the groundbreaking for a new artificial field and track across the way on Fourth Street has been delayed for an entire year. (Work was originally supposed to begin during the just-concluded summer break.)
I believe that it is unconscionable for there to be such a disparity between high schools in the same district, and the failure to adequately address the needs at AHS starts at the top. The City of Alhambra is also partly responsible because of its refusal to give up the block of Fourth Street which divides the campus and has created space issues.
I am going on the record to call out the Alhambra Unified School District and the City of Alhambra for creating a situation at AHS that is unacceptable. The other two high schools have received far better treatment, and all of the district’s elementary schools are in good if not excellent condition. Why in the world should things be any different at Alhambra High School?
The MV was terrible. No adjustments offensively and especially defensively. That new DC looked lost out there.
Seems like ER fans say that every year. Under the radar. I’ll start believing that when they prove they can play in the 4th Quarter against an equal opponent. You can bet on them to collapse in the 4th.
What exactly is going on at Arroyo? Coach acting like a 10-year old during and after the game-in front of his team/admin/fans? If it was truly personal regarding things that were said when he was at SVHS-what does that have to do with things now? Those coaches/kids were not there at the time-why act like that 3 years later? Talk about lack of class-on side kick every time-including up 38-6 with 7 minutes to play-do they have no one that can kickoff? Calling timeout with under 30 seconds left to avoid a delay of game-THEN taking a knee? I just remember all of the games with Jim, Chuck and Mac that were over at halftime and they never once tried to run up the score or embarrass the opponent. The schedule is going to get much tougher over these next 3 games-let’s see if they can rise to the challenge and keep themselves under control.
I see the Arroyo admin is following the foot steps of SIerra Vista, with Moye move. It looks like Sierra Vista has cheated its way to the abyss… Who has the responsibility to stop this, Coaching staff or Amin?
The guy disrespected football by what he put on the field over there. Then he made excuses saying it was… you know.
He would do the same thing on LA sidelines when he was DC at the other team players. Classless, ghetto! Go to city section with that.
Being at the Arroyo vs SV game, it was clear by Moyé’s actions that there is absolutely no discipline in that program at all. How classless can you be trying to fight in front of both teams… also Heard arroyo coaches f bombing kids and other coaches on the sideline. Very sad. I really do hope that arroyo drops the hammer on him after that pathetic showing by instigating the entire game. Word has it, he was also talking crap to the SV kids on his own sideline all game. That’s classless, arroyo needs to get rid of him asap. I hope they do the right thing this week…
Looks like the game got suspended at half time…
El Rancho is going under the radar…And that DRL championship will be on 10/4 . It will be a dog fight and the closest it been in years ! Teams are evenly matched.
What’s going on Warren ????
Mt View football is pathetic. Arroyo gonna beat them 40-0 again. MV will never beat arroyo. Ever.
Where did FridayKnight aka get back coach aka assistant to the assistant go???? You ok bro? Now that they suck you’re gone? You followed Singiser to Arroyo and they suck too???
Either way, the MVS blog is better without you.
I think it’s time Schurr deserves some respect
They didn’t hire right guy couple years ago . I have no idea where this new coach came from or has done ; press kind to him preseason but game vs workman is for all the marbles in upside down totem pole . They might even make Rosemead look good # rivalry
Defense for schurr stepped up big but Ls on defense was too much for the offense
You guys only played bad because you guys were almost all but shutdown, both of the defenses played well schurr couldn’t get anything on offense and they made plays due to schurr defense being on the field for most of the game. 48-3 doesn’t turn into 21-3 off of “playing bad”
What’s the story on Warren high school
Is Mayfair that good??? Mike Moschetti left and La Mirada can’t recover!!!!
I guess so does Whittier High football need to quit. Temple City beat them worse. Stop being a mom. No one holding a gun to your son making him play.
Combination of both .Arroyo inherently much better than SV. Still, If you don’t go running clock vs SV , you are not very good . Their previous game was 56-6 early 3rd quarter
U guys played bad or Schurr had a good performance on defense?
Gabrielino needs to fold their program. They look like a fresh/soph team playing varsity teams!!! Someone is gonna get hurt out there 🤣
Think again, ER is much better than what people think, they are going to fly under the radar for a bit this season then a bunch of people are going to say where did they come from.
Arroyo is very bad Sierra Vista is just worse.
Is Arroyo not as bad as people think they are or is Sierra Vista that bad?
Long had 3 interceptions and 1 fumble in the first half. Finally, they put Bonilla in at the second half, and he took control of the game. After he came in, things changed dramatically. It’s clear that the coaching staff is treating him unfairly, and they don’t seem to care who knows it. Bonilla’s parents are out of touch.
That Mountain View loss is pathetic!
I was at the game and yes we played bad. Luckily we did or it would’ve been 48-3. The distance between us very large. Don’t think they were close because it wasn’t.
Alhambra wrs got some work to do …most of the time they were dropping wide open catches .. not to mention the qb overthrowing them as well … … they really beat themselves up.. they could of put up some numbers ..El Monte looked okay qb has some work to do ..
ER gets their 1 guarenteed win this season. Better keep BG on their schedule every year LOL.
Wasn’t there. Was Almont league Shurr that good or was D1 La Serna that bad? Who QB’d for LS? Thanks.
I would say act like you’ve been there before coach BUT he hasn’t first W as a HC in 10 tries. Then people wonder why. The guy disrespected a coach that had him as his DC at Los Altos. Moye 1-9 outscored 392-79.
Did u watch the game?, La serna barely got anything on offense qb threw 3 picks, they fumbled twice, know what you talking about before you speak on it
Glendora vs Jurupa Hills?
Mike needs to start hitting the youth leagues recruiting talent to Alhambra
Bring Jude to Alhambra
Looks like Gabrielino will be winless and score 0 points this year… again smh
SV disrespected Coach Moye when he worked there. It was good to see him get the win over that crappy school.
Ugh.
How many readers believe that La Serna had any trouble at all with Schurr? Does the score of 21-3 indicate the true distance between these two teams? The Whittier group is once again laying down for the sake of a lower power rating, which translates into a postseason cake walk.
Where’s the Ganesha fan who was talking about they got the gitters out last week? Cause they looked worse this week. Innovate a win
Ugly win for arroyo tonight. Played a very bad Sierra Vista. Top it off, Moyé of arroyo tries to rush the SV sideline at halftime to start some extra curriculars, then at the end, runs his mouth and then has to be restrained from fighting SV coaches in front of both teams. Poor class, what has happened at Arroyo? Does Arroyo gets smart after this incident and fire him Monday? That’s real bad sportsmanship and leadership in front of kids. Really bad look
San Gabriel 48 Rosemead 14
Poor showing by the Moors, hopefully Mike figures something but looking like the only win this year will be keppel again
Hope Alhambra makes the right decision and fires Mike and gets back to making athletics a priority
