(West Covina) – A thirty-point onslaught in the second quarter paved the way for West Covina to solidify its #1 CIF-SS Southeast Division ranking by destroying Diamond Bar 58-20.
The win also gave the Bulldogs the Hacienda League title.
West Covina’s quick strike offense had seven scoring drives take less than four plays on eight of its touchdowns.
Chris Solomon led the ground attack for the Bulldogs with seven carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Aaron Salgado added two scores of his own and broke the century mark rushing with 136 yards.
As a team West Covina ran wild over the playoff hopeful Brahmas with 423 rushing yards.
The wheels completely fell off Diamond Bar after Henry Omana (21 of 31 for 214 yards and two interceptions) was intercepted by Solomon at the Bulldogs 44-yard line. Solomon would cap off the four-play drive with a 32-yard run to extend the West Covina lead to 21-10.
On the next possession for the Brahmas, Omana would find Brandon Sanchez near the sideline for a gain of three-yards. During his attempt to fight for more yardage, Sanchez had the ball get jarred loose by Maurice Dupleasis. The ball would be scooped up by Lonzell Barnett.
Two-plays later B.J. Lee would score one of his touchdowns on the evening from 10-yards out to begin the route.
As Diamond Bar was mired in quicksand, the Bulldogs continued to roll as an attempted punt missed the punter on the snap and ended up out of the end zone for a safety.
West Covina would continue to put the pressure on the Brahmas defense on its next possession as Lee scored on a long 57-yard touchdown and gave West Covina a 27-point lead with 3:03 to play in the first half.
Omana would then attempt to lead Diamond Bar back late in the half as he connected with Josh Villoria for a 16-yard strike to the Bulldogs 45-yard line. On the next play, Omana would be intercepted by Anthony Molina at the 20-yard line and scampered all the way to the Brahma 18-yard line.
Molina would finish what he started with a nice fade route pass from George Johnson from 18-yards out to take the wind out of the sails for Diamond Bar heading into the break.
The second half started much like the first half for West Covina as they marched down the field on three-plays. Salgado would score from 20-yards out to continue the onslaught of points.
Diamond Bar would finally stop the bleeding for a small time as Brian Drulias hit a 27-yard field goal to close the gap a small amount. Drulias finished with two field goals on the night.
Salgado would end the scoring for the Bulldogs late in the third quarter on an 88-yard run that seemed to take much longer as the fullback rumbled home.
The Brahmas added a late touchdown with six seconds remaining in the game as George Katrib caught a wonderfully thrown ball from Andrew Cameron from 31-yards out.
