(San Marino) – The window of opportunity to win a Rio Hondo League title for San Marino has gotten quite small after its 7-4 loss to first-place La Canada.

The win by the Spartans shrunk its “magic number” to two.

Lauren O’Leary allowed four runs with two unearned while scattering four hits and recorded eight strike outs.

La Canada became the beneficiary of an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Anna Edwards reached on an error stole second and was allowed to score after two-pass balls brought Edwards home. During the second pass ball Aubri Thompson reached first base on a strike out. Thompson managed to steal second and was brought in by Shirley Drange’s double.

With two outs in the second inning, Kayla McCue singled and stole second. Edwards followed with a fly ball that was dropped in center field to score McCue. Edwards raced all the way to third on the hit. A pass ball allowed Edwards to score to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.

Spotting La Canada a 5-0 lead the Titans battled back in its own half of the third inning with two outs. Courtney Johnson singled and Larissa Phillips reached safely on an error. Both Erin and Emily Stenwall did their part to help cut the Spartan lead to two as Erin reached on an error and Emily doubled to score Phillips and Erin.

Edwards responded with a deep shot to left field for homer for La Canada in the fifth inning.

The Spartans added an insurance run in the sixth with the help of the San Marino defense. Kelsey Drange reached on an error and scored when Stephanie Bathke reached on another error.

The Titans answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning as Michelle Floyd singled and scored on Caitlyn Callahan’s single.

Floyd finished the game with twelve strike outs and allowing just two earned runs in the game.
