Passing Tournaments Saturday; Alhambra Update

"Parents only" meeting Thursday night at Alhambra High School

“Parents only” meeting Thursday night at Alhambra High School

If you’re a high school football fan, keep this Saturday open. There are three huge passing tournaments this Saturday at Arroyo, Santa Fe and El Rancho and if you plan your day right you could hit all three.  Arroyo is hosting the SGV Shootout featuring 24 teams. Arroyo HC Jim Singiser feels this might be the most competitive tournament the SGV Shootout has ever fielded.

West Covina won the tournament last year but won’t be there. “Yeah we won’t be able to defend our title,” West Covina Coach Mike Maggiore said. The Bulldogs go on dead period next week and when they come back they will finish out the summer practicing on their own. Tuesday’s toss was their last passing tourney of the summer.

Teams that will be at Arroyo however include Monrovia, Bonita, Diamond Bar, Maranatha, Buena Park and Azusa. Diamond Bar won the Shootout two years ago and Monrovia of course has won three straight CIF titles.

Santa Fe will host 25 teams. Some of the prominent schools participating include Charter Oak, South Hills, La Salle and Sierra Canyon. Santa Fe will be joined by Cal and Whittier from the Del Rio League and Burroughs from the Pacific will be on hand as well.

The El Rancho tournament also features 24 teams. All of the tournaments last all day so if you get up early, you can hit one in the morning one about noon and the last one in the afternoon.

Alhambra Update: Alhambra Athletic Director Jerry DeSantis confirmed that there is a “parents only” meeting tonight (Thursday) at 7:00 pm at Alhambra High. He declined to give any other information about the meeting or any comment regarding the dismissal of the entire football coaching staff. “That’s all of the information I have,” DeSantis said.

Chuck Leonardis and his entire staff were fired Tuesday after it was revealed that the staff provided players with nutritional supplements.

Sources told Mid Valley Sports on Wednesday that Alhambra has selected a new coach and is in the process of bringing him aboard. More details to follow.
