(Whittier) The La Serna Lancers and the Santa Fe Chiefs met Friday night on the campus of Whittier College to do battle for Del Rio supremacy. It was the Lancers who reigned supreme as they shut out the Chiefs 37-0 to improve to 5-2 and 2-0 in league play.

I wasn’t just the game Santa Fe lost on the night as starting quarterback Christian Lara was injured and lost for the rest of the game with a serious lower leg injury. Mid Valley prayers go out to Christian for a speedy recovery.

*** La Serna got on the board first when a nine play drive stalled at the Santa Fe 19. Alexander Vasquez trotted onto the field a booted a 36-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead.

*** Defense was the name of the game in the first period as the lone score was the Vasquez field goal.

*** Special teams accounted for the Lancers first touchdown of the night. La Serna got a piece of a Santa Fe punt that was scooped up by Tony Ceron who punched it in from seven yards away.

*** Frankie Palmer got in the mix for the third Lancer score when he hooked up with Matthew Rosales on a 42-yard strike to extend the lead to 17-0.

*** A nine yard pass from Palmer to D’Andre Sanchez capped the first half scoring and send the teams to the locker room with La Serna leading 24-0.

*** With 1:00 left in the third period it was the Palmer to Sanchez connection again this time from six yards away. Sanchez caught five balls for 39-yards and the two scores.

*** The game was put on hold for more than 30 minutes with 8:13 left in the third while Lara was being treated to.

*** Bryce Oliver capped the scoring barrage for the Lancers with an eight yard run to paydirt with 9:50 left in the final frame.

*** Palmer finished the evening hitting on 14 of 19 passes for 196-yards and three scores. He also added 51-yards rushing.

*** La Serna will be at home next week hosting Pioneer while Santa Fe will hook up with Whittier at El Rancho High School.
