(Norwalk)- With seven seconds left in the fourth quarter, Norwalk quarterback Jacob Carr scored the game winning touchdown to lift the Lancers to a 41-36 victory over the Mayfair Monsoons and secured Suburban League title Friday night at Excelsior field.
Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter. Norwalk had an opportunity to put three on the board but the 22-yard field goal was blocked. On its following drive, Lancers running back Rashaad Penny fumbled the ball and the Monsoons took possession at the Norwalk 33.
On the next play Mayfair quarterback Isaiah Jackson connected with Nick Burrus for a 33-yard touchdown with 7:42 left before half.
Penny immediately atoned for the fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Letting the ball roll to the two yard line, Penny picked it up and returned the kick off 98-yards to paydirt and the game was tied at 7-7.
Three plays later Jackson answered for the Monsoons by connecting with Burrus again for a 77-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead.
Again, the lead did not last. After stopping the Lancers run on three straight plays, Norwalk was forced to punt but instead of punting, Penny faked the kicked and scored on a 86-yard run with 2:13 left in the first half.
Norwalk added seven more after Ryan McDowell crossed the goal line just before the half ended. The Lancers led 21-14 at the break.
Following intermission, both schools traded scores on four consecutive drives. With less than five minutes left in the game, McDowell fumbled the ball. Mayfair recovered and eight plays later, Faimzon Creighton punched it in from one yard. He was also responsible for scoring the two point conversion and to put his team up 36-35.
With two minutes left in the game, the Lancers only had to travel 60-yards to score. Both Carr and McDowell carried the ball once before Carr connected with Penny for a 37-yard completion.
Penny came out of the game following the catch. Four plays later, Carr faked the spike and bulldozed his way into the end zone for the game winning touchdown.
