The CIF At-Large (Wild Card) selections have been released. As was expected Baldwin Park, with a 7-3 record, was chosen to be the 16th team in the Mid-Valley Division.
The surprise is in the Southeast Division where many thought Crescenta Valley with an 8-2 record (losses to Muir & Burroughs) would have been the obvious choice for the division’s lone at-large birth. The spot however went to West Covina at 5-5.
CIF also passed over Bonita (6-4) and Artesia (6-4),
The combined records of the five teams WC lost to is 35-15.
The four schools that defeated Bonita were a combined 27-13
The four schools that defeated Artesia (La Mirada, Mayfair, Norwalk & San Juan Hills) were a combined 28-12
The eight schools that CV defeated were a combined 37-43. Just three of those schools are going to the playoffs.
In the Northwest technically Bishop Diego enters as an at-large, but with an 8-2 record and a difficult schedule it was no surprise. Carpinteria picking up a wild card birth was no surprise. The surprise was the reaching down to Santa Paula, from the same Tri-Valley, and putting them in the playoffs.
Our guess is the inclusion of Santa Paul would leave Whittier Christian, the third place team from the Olympic in the cold when the brackets are released tomorrow.
All five Tri-Valley League teams have qualified for the playoffs.
