[Hawaiian Gardens] Former Mexican Olympian and three-time world champion Abner Mares (26-1-1) handed out 300 turkey dinners with the help of volunteers to needy families in his hometown of Hawaiian Gardens, Sunday morning at City Hall.
“His love for Hawaiian Gardens is putting us on the map” said Mayor Victor Farfan. “He’s an inspiring role model reaching out to the families of the city he grew up in. I speak not only for myself but the rest of the city on how thankful we are for him showing so much love.” said Farfan when asked about Mares.
Monique Gonzalez the event coordinator met Mares five years ago and was touched by his story and the way he grew up.
Mares and Gonzalez got the idea for the Turkey Giveaway from Oscar De La Hoya’s turkey drives that Gonzalez coordinated.
Gonzalez said “Abner is a amazing person after I heard his story of his up bringing, he’s a grateful, amazing role model. This is the first of many more things to come.”
“I grew up here, it’s one of the poorer neighborhoods. It’s only right to give back” said Mares when asked why he does it.
“I’m thankful for Monique the volunteers and the whole Team Mares staff. I’m just blessed this is the first of many years to come.”
Mares looks to avenge his only defeat February 15th, against Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8) and regain his titles.
