(La Canada) – The Campbell Hall Vikings came from behind Friday evening, scoring twice in the fourth quarter, to beat the host La Canada Spartans, 27-23, in front of a large crowd at La Canada’s Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans took the lead in the first quarter when Macky Plocher connected with Jack Stroben for an eight yard touchdown. Corey Cheung successfully converted the 2-point PAT attempt, making the score 8-0, La Canada, with 3:38 remaining in the games opening period.
La Canada added to their lead in quarter number two. Cheung added to his scoring total, scoring a pair of touchdowns. The first score came on a 1-yard blast, the second on a 4-yard jaunt.
Campbell Hall also got on the board in the second, when Isaiah Sepand connected with Kian Salehi for a 20-yard touchdown strike. The PAT attempt was successfully converted by Vicente Navarro, making the score 20-7, La Canada as the half came to a close.
La Canada’s final points of the evening came at the end of the opening drive of the third quarter. After stalling on the Campbell Hall 7-yard line, Shaina Clorfeine successfully converted a 24-yard field goal attempt, giving the Spartans a 23-7 lead, at the halfway point of the third quarter.
From this point, it was all Campbell Hall. The Vikings cut into the lead in the third, scoring on a 29-yard TD toss from Sepand to Christopher Hammond. The PAT attempt was blocked, making the score 23-13, after three quarters.
Campbell Hall continued to erase the deficit in the fourth quarter. Sepand and Hammond would connect for a second time, on a 19-yard touchdown hook-up. Navarro added the PAT, making the score 23-20, La Canada, with 8:00 remaining in regulation.
The Vikings final score of the evening came when Sepand called his own number, scoring on a 4-yard rush. The Navarro PAT was again perfect, giving the Vikings their first lead of the game, 27-23, with 2:11 remaining. Sepand would end the evening with 14 pass completions for 207 yards and 3 Touchdowns, while rushing for 62 yards and one score.
La Canada had one final chance. Unfortunately, Plocher’s last few offerings would fall to the ground, giving Campbell the victory, 27-23.
Next week, the 3-1 Spartans will travel to Gladstone, to play the Gladiators. The game is scheduled for 11:00 AM next Saturday. The 5-0 Vikings will are home on Friday night hosting the Heritage Christian Warriors. Kickoff for this contest is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
