La Serna Overwhelms El Rancho

Owen Long contributed on defense as well as two scores on offense.

By Duane Barker

(Pico Rivera) In a highly anticipated matchup the La Serna Lancers and the El Rancho Dons had one more go in their heated Del Rio League rivalry. Friday night belonged to the Lancers as they handed the Dons their first defeat of 2021 to the tune of 42-7 at El Rancho High School.

Jake Long threw for 301 yards and a touchdown to lead the Lancers to the Del Rio League title and keep the momentum of a seven game winning streak heading into post season. Only Whittier is left on the agenda for La Serna.

On the other side of the line of scrimmage Elijah Mitchell had his first rough outing for the Dons. Mitchell did throw for more than 200 yards but had only one touchdown and four costly interceptions.

La Serna did the first bit of damage close to midway through the first quarter. Long capped a nine play 70-yard drive with a 13-yard strike to Jake George. Long stayed on the field to boot through the extra point to give the Lancers the 7-0 lead.

The 7-0 advantage would remain for La Serna until early in the second. Sanaa Aguirre powered his way into the endzone on a 9-yard run to finish off 70-yard drive. Again Long did the kicking duty and pushed the lead to 14-0.

Jake Long was on point in and out of the pocket Friday night.

Aguirre got his second score on the night this time from seven yards away just a few minutes later. The two play 54-yard drive was set up by Mitchell’s first pick on the night.

Both defenses stiffened up at this point and neither team would see paydirt for the rest of the first half.

Up 21-0 La Serna got the ball to start the second have and immediately went to work on a 6-play 65-yard drive. Owen Long got the call this time and scored on a 5-yard run. Once more Jake Long added the extra point.

After an offensive drought that lasted deep into the third quarter, El Rancho went on an 18-play drive that chewed up 60-yards finished off with a two yard pass from Mitchell to Anthony Bonilla. Jacob Medina added the extra point but it would be a close as the Dons would get at 28-7.

Two fourth quarter scores, Owen Long’s second and another by Adrian Castro finished off the score for La Serna.

El Rancho will now have a week off in anticipation of the CIF Playoff pairings which will be held after next weekends contests are completed.

After that La Serna game tonight, it’s probably over for them with that flat QB. He played intimidated and scared. LS was favored to win by 40! they are in trouble … but yay for the del Rio league champs. Whomp whomp. Big accomplishment.

LS is better off without Beltran. The guy had too many problems off the field. I would list them but I’m sure it wouldn’t get posted.

Beltran? He couldn’t make it at BG so no thanks. Coach George is doing just fine. When was the last time you ever been to a championship game? You guys can’t even win D12. YOu play weak teams and pad your stats. “Oh look we’re 9-0 ” You have a loser mentality. Make excuses why you can’t be great. Fire your AD and Head coach and maybe you wouldn’t lose your kids to St Paul.

How is there no incentive to winning a League Title? You do realize that there are still minimal CIF champions. No matter how the formulas change it doesnt change that fact that winning a CIF title is very rare. Coaches and Players are aiming for league titles and winning the schools they see every year for those bragging rights and hanging the league title banner. There is not one school that is saying lets lose a league title and go to a lower division because they have zero idea who will be in that division. They would still have to win 2/3 tough matchups to win CIF.

well thats ONE thing we can agree on… its not right to give zero credit to the team who wins league… with this new system , only goal is to make playoffs and then its a race lol… geared to everyone having a fighters chance .

I personally liked the way they had it prior to covid… your division is based off last years schedule … yea you got these teams who transfer galore and have a wonder season in d12 lol… but in todays system .. you got teams who get dog walked all pre season, win league and be sent down divisions and now have a good shot at walking threw cif lol… example LA HABRA .. dont be surprised if they end up in CIF finals easy

@Wut that is correct SP had a similar schedule as the ranch. Loyola will win this week and a 3rd place team gets into the playoffs. I don’t think that’s fair. There is no incentive for winning league. Lets see how long this system lasts.

I guess the whole Del Rio league should transfer to St Paul since most of the them have not fared any better, you know the St. Paul that has to play teams like Huntington Park, Long Beach Jordan, a 1-7 Righetti to pad their record, the same St. Paul who trailed Diamond Ranch at half, you know the same St. Paul that scored 7 points during the entire spring and the same St. Paul that might get into the playoffs as an at large because they sure won’t get an automatic bid, you know the same St. Paul that talks as if they are D-1 yet meddle around Division 6, you clowns need to take a seat and shut up.

I agree, El Rancho needed to face some tougher competition to better prepare them for a game against LS. The two tougher teams we played were Covina and Norwalk and they really weren’t that much of a test. We needed Sierra Vista to keep their old staff and we needed to play that Santa Ana game, Covina and Norwalk were not enough to prepare us. ER really never should have been favored in this game, if you asked anyone on staff I am sure they would tell you the same, not sure why the Trib guys picked ER. Ultimately the plan is to never to try to get fat off ez comp, but it just happened that way.

I think all this talk and proclaiming that so and so is the best at xy position and we are going to beat you this week is unnecessary, the ranch has never been a program that needs to talk smack or bring itself unnecessary hype. These boys then start getting unnecessary hate that they do not deserve. The boys just need the put their heads down and get to work and let their helmets do the talking.

The booster club has done an amazing job supporting these boys in a very positive way. I challenge ourselves to pull back on some of the antics going on in these blogs, thats not the ranch way, we need to win with class and lose with class.

Time to heal up and try to have a successful cif playoffs. This new playoff system has really kinda watered down the importance of league championships, I don’t like it. It’s very possible that El Rancho and LS will have some very tough playoff draws playing on the road and it’s very possible for a 3rd place at large team to have an easy road to a championship. Good luck to all the teams who made it to the next chapter.

I could just say “Drop the Mic” and this post would be over.

El Rancho had a great run! They played teams they should play. What happens when have an undefeated run you lose prospective. You think you are better than you are. LS faced serious competition in the preseason.

El Rancho never faced a defense like LS this season. Their nickname is not “pick city USA” led by the Mayor #2 Nick Meza for nothing. El Rancho never faced a skill player like #7 Jake George this season. By the way George has been destroying you for 3 years. Be happy he is a senior.

Your much hyped quarterback was exposed. Your running back was exposed. Your defense was exposed. Use what you learned last Friday and have a great CIF run! It’s now time root for each other.

LS is going to have a tough CIF road if they are placed in division 4. Rancho is going to have an even tougher CIF road if they’re placed in division 5.

LS will destroy Whittier on Friday. Back ups should have a big game. El Rancho has a week to rest. Get better from your injuries and let’s all kick DELETED in CIF.

@Ranch18 … that was a great spiel but no moral victories here ER was 9-0 … “Learning experience” or a reality check…. There’s a fine line… a lot of props to #24 for playing hurt and doing what he could but even if he was healthy it would have been the same outcome… he got shown up by two 2 sophomore RB’s (#1 & #25) and a junior (#4)… and they played hard until they decided it was time to run the clock out by snapping it with couple seconds left on the play clock.. repeat of the COVID game in spring… Mitchell… good size but this team was a lot of hype.. #18 for the ranch must be your son… make sure he ice’s up LOL nuff said

Come on number one linebacker in sgv lol. The kid is good but don’t get to crazy now.The so called heart of your defense gave up 14 points to Santa Fe, 21 to Whittier, 28 to Cal, 42 to LS.

Wish we could have seen Bonilla at his best but I would take LS #1 Owen Long any day of week over any back in the league.
    Owen Long
    Vance Johnson
    Then Bonilla

Scary part is the ranch is gonna have to deal with #14 another two more years. Remember Owen Long and Jayden #14 are only sophomores.

No excuses … we play who ever is next … we don’t make excuses
Injuries , Missing players , blah blah is all part of the game .. get over it . I wish we had the luxury of depth but unfortunately we do not , many boys go both ways …

I wish the game would have been closer, but LS did exactly what we would have done … they found a hole and exploited it … LS you got some dawgs – my favorite is #14 his got that chip on the shoulder style, everyone else looked basic aside from Jake ..
I hoped we had a injurie free game but the opposite happened … we’re a going to use this week off to soak in the L, rest , heal .. & move on – SEASON starts over week one of playoffs

Aside from the Mistakes , I did notice one thing about our boys … THEY FOUGHT .. till the end … Our QB kept pushing forward even when balls weren’t going his way, kids dropped the ball, or blocking …. 4 pics = Learning Experience… It’s unfortunate a lot of these boys are seniors I’m happy with the boys effort, they got punched , dazed but finished the fight and never to be knocked down ..#54 had some monster hits ! And is only getting better every game… My Boy #24 did his thing solidified why he is the BEST RB In the area and especially our league – y’all can’t say nothing negative : he knew how much his team depended on him – one leg and all he went in and battled , we could have used him on D tho but he’ll be ready by playoffs.
#18 – if you know , you know – #1 LB in SGV
