[Whittier] – La Serna started off slow but Owen Long and company ended up with a 46-21 victory Friday night over Great Oak in the first round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs at Thorstenson Stadium.
The Lancers first drive ate up half the first quarter until Aiden Leonardo hit Jayden Northrup who sliced through the defense for a 29-yard score.
Both teams exchanged punts and fumbles until late in the second quarter when the Wolfpack tied it up with a Cole Vazquez quarterback sneak.
La Serna took the lead on its next possession when Jacen Alcaraz set up an Owen Long six-yard touchdown.
The Lancers forced a punt and then added to their lead when Christian Miranda hit a 38-yard field goal to make it 17-7.
Another Great Oak punt and the Lancers kept their momentum going when Long scored again this time from 17-yards, a two-point conversion from CJ Cron to Long made it 25-7 at the half.
The Wolfpack punted on their first possession and La Serna turned it over on downs to start the second half.
Great Oak got a drive going but a big hit from the Lancers led to an interception that fell into the hands of Cron who took it 38-yards to paydirt.
The Wolfpack got a big kick return but fumbled and Gavin Welling fell on it for La Serna.
Lancers added to their lead with an eight-yard run by Adrian Castro to put the score at 39-7.
Great Oak got on the board after a long drive was capped off with a seven-yard touchdown run by Tavious Truitt.
La Serna had get a field goal attempt blocked and Wolfpack tried some trickery when a double pass from Vazquez to James Trevino who found a wide-open Ryan Mann to make it 39-21 with four minutes left in the game.
The Lancers killed the momentum however when Drew Cobos broke free for a 65-yard touchdown capping off the scoring and closing out the game 46-21.
La Serna will move onto the next round to face Trabuco Hills while Great Oak will finish their season 8-3.
