@Sportsman
Last time CAL beat La Serna was 2011.
14-13.
Hope Cal can return to the 1999-2010 era of successful teams. Back when Cal had to make playoff runs against loaded Los Altos, La Habra and Charter Oak squads.
DRL champs in 2000, 2006, 2007, 2010. Each time ran into a juggernaut that stopped their title run. Maybe they make a run in D12 this postseason.
anonymous when was the last time cal hi beat la serna
Anonymous why dont you reply to my problem for you ” which teams dominated DRL ‘ twelve and more years ago’
Yet Anonymous /? did you ever have the guts to answer my problem for you? jWhy dont you answer me about over twelve or so years ago who dominated DRL
In La Serna’s last ever Del Rio league game vs Whittier, La Serna can tie the all-time record for consecutive Del Rio/Whitmont League games won previously held by Santa Fe with 35 in a row.
Whittier was the last league team to play La Serna to within a one score loss in 2018, losing 28-21. Santa Fe was the last league team to beat LS in 2017.
Good luck to the Lancers, hopefully they get the record and win their 35th DRL game in a row and their 8th straight league championship

Unbelievable,
“…the result is a lot of political and social indoctrination with a sprinkle of math, english and science…”?
What a clown you are! HAHAHAHAHA!!! Believing schools indoctrinate! HAHAHAHAHAHA
In the 2000s Santa Fe was the dominant team because they were pulling kids from the inner city and were just faster and more athletic than anyone in the league. Cal Hi had a couple of good runs, 06, 09 they had Nick Grisby and Terris Jones both players who were just above and beyond most in the league. During those years they also had the LeVier kids, if those kids were around today I’m almost certain they would all have attended La Serna. El Rancho had a few good years where they battled it out for 2nd, 3rd place but fell off the map because the admin stupidly hired Willie Reyna who had 0 coaching experience on varsity and left the program a dumpster fire in 06 by going 0-10. It took about years for the program to come back to life. Around 2010ish the WUHSD district offered open enrollment, LS had a deep playoff run with Buenrostro at QB, all of a sudden they are getting the Palmers, McCaffers, Rosales boys etc and it became a destination, LS starts making deep playoff runs, wins a CIF title with Palmer and the rest is history, they just keep chugging along like an avalanche, meanwhile the rest of the Whittier school have suffered immensely.
the wealthier schools tend to get less kids with issues than la serna so parents send them to la serna? Anonymous ? so why was la serna just very average in football before the date i am focusing on? Please enlighten all of us on the reasons why ls was not even close to dominant in the DRL before Beltran arrived as head coach when he took over for the previous coach? As a matter of fact didn’t la serna place third in league when they made their great cif playoff run to the finals in 2011 I believe. i might be a year or two off on the exact years. I would like to understand more about which clubs were more dominant then and not now. How did Cal Hi do when Dusan Ancich and Patricio were the head coaches in the early 2000’s? you know it all and i wish I knew all you know ( even though you are definitely wrong about la Serna always getting the special players that you described in your commentary) because i am wanting to be more educated on what was the DRL like from 2000 to about 2012? i suggest you don’t know half as much as you think you do
Anonymous?? Can you supply a little of your super knowledge so I can possibly better realize what DRL was like before la serna became the powerhouse ? I will appreciate your acumen focusing on el rancho and la serna, before lets say 2010, and which high schools in this league usually controlled the top first, second and third places in league and earned their playoff berths? I seem to recall Cal hi and santa fe were pretty dominant before the date i stated above. Yes ER had two or three league championships when patricio was head coach; then he went to cal hi and el rancho pretty much did very little for a few years. Can you enlighten me with telling me which clubs went the furthest in cif playoffs during the first ten years 2000 to 2010? No i doubt if you can without lots of research.. Because la serna and el rancho were not even third place playoff teams much during the time when Cal and Santa fe were winning the league ; right am i? yes i am correct; yet you stated ls and er after 2010 right. i dont mind if you ask me for help
yet sports man you will not see me criticizing and insulting head coaches non stop
El Rancho is the lone school in the El Rancho Unified District, they can take anyone in pico Rivera, they typically do, right now really the only kid El Rancho is missing is Saucedo at Amat. There is no longer 2 youth football programs in pico Rivera, El Rancho at some points had 2 feeders, that is how they were able to beat La Serna in the past. Now the lone feeder program seems to have people pulling in all directions, doesn’t really help ER, the new facilities have gotten some kids from neighboring cities to enroll, but not many at least yet.
On the other hand, La Serna’s run seems to have been sparked during the buenrostro year, they had a good group of kids, who made a deep run, the WUHSD opened up enrollment and people wanted to flock to the successful team in the richer nicer area of Whittier. Why would I attend Whittier or Cal High or Pioneer or SFHS if I had the freedom to enroll at La Serna, a luxury that wasn’t always available. The richer areas attract more families from other area who want to be a part of that success, the richer areas tend to get less kids with issues at home hence resulting in higher rated schools with greater graduation rates and greater amount of kids going to college. Education really is the same at every school in the league, the only difference is the income levels of the families at each school.
If you had to rate a program that would be the 2nd best destination in the league it would have to be El Rancho however it doesn’t really help because it’s not like El Rancho will pull the kids who should be at Whittier or pioneer, those kids will just go to La Serna. People need to understand that these discussions are not a matter of hating or making excuses, it’s almost a given that none of the schools are able to beat LS on any given year and it’s not because the programs are terrible, those coaches do some good work, it’s just a matter of La Serna having the perfect recipe of talent, location, coaching etc and just being that much better than everyone. El Rancho can make deep playoff runs and all it’s going to attract is maybe a few kids from Montebello or El Monte who typically are no different than what they already get, you can forget about ER being able to land anyone from Downey.
La Serna’s situation is basically the same situation that Long Beach Poly had going on for decades, only now has Poly begun to suffer because all the top LB talent is in bellflower or Santa Ana, the only real possibility for LS to drop its level is for La Mirada to get back to its winning ways and for St Paul to became what it used to be, I don’t see LM doing too well anytime soon and St Paul isn’t in the best of situations either, lots of unhappy people over there. The downfall of St Paul and LM has greatly benefited La Serna.
As much crap as people talk about El Rancho, the program is well established, the staff is great, the kids are bought in, they are just at the wrong place at the wrong time in the current state of the Del Rio League, however they have managed to play some good football and also go on some nice playoff runs. The new league is most likely going to be comprised of Schurr, BG, El Rancho, El Monte, possibly Montebello, ER and Schurr will battle it out yearly.
I take issue with the assumption that a La Serna education is somehow better than what can be had at other area high schools. Remember, Sacramento strictly tells all California schools what to teach, when to teach it, and how long to teach it. Ask any educator to verify this. It’s one size fits all, and the result is a lot of political and social indoctrination with a sprinkle of math, english and science. Nothing too heavy mind you, and certainly nothing that will prepare the youngsters for more than minimum wage employment. To be frank, high school boils down to day care for virtual adults in which a modicum of learning takes place.
Believe it
Crazy how none of the others schools, El Rancho, Santa Fe, Whittier, Cal, or Pioneer have been able to capitalize on the open enrollment opportunity and at least become the 2nd best destination.
But I get what you are saying. What you are saying is La Serna is the best school, with the best teachers, the best admin, the best facilities, the best coaches, the best athletic dept. and so it attracts the best athletes and everybody in the area wants to go there.
If I had a son who was going to be a Varsity FB player next year (especially if he was an All-League caliber D-Linemen or Linebacker, which will be La Serna’s biggest position of need from of the looks of it) I would definitely transfer him over to LS.
The other schools need to do something to make themselves more attractive or the hot chick, or in this case the top athletes, will keep picking La Serna, instead of you.
I thought by now everyone and his cousin would know that La Serna’s entire athletic success over the last two decades is due to the open enrollment hustle. But here comes this guy calling himself a guru, saying it’s “rather remarkable” that LS has done well lately. Sort of like saying you’re amazed that a guy who jumps from a 100-story building couldn’t survive the impact with the sidewalk
If it were in my power, I’d make some of these guys pass a test to see if they know about open enrollment, and what it has done to make the richest school in the area even more enriched. If you pass the test, we’ll suffer through your hot air…if not, do some more research.
It’s simple really. You could put your local Jr midget pop Warner coach at La Serna and he would win. If you’re 3-4 deep at every position and the others schools in your league aren’t you are going to win. Not a matter of X’s and O’s, just a matter of jimmys and joes. Ask yourself why couldn’t Beltran replicate that success when he left to BG? because he didn’t have the kids and the numbers that he had at La Serna by default. If George left they could plug in Castillo and they would just keep going, George would not be able to replicate the success at let’s say Whittier high school for example.
Saw all 3 league games so far. El Rancho game was the closest and made us sweat the most. Santa Fe played tough. Cal was a blowout from start to finish and they scored their TD’s in garbage time.
@Gaggle of Anons
That alone is great praise for the La Serna program the fact that they “aren’t very good this year” but still beat everyone in their league by at least 2 TDs.
Others think they are so good they are able to cruise to 17 pt victories and are not winning by 50 in order to make a lower playoff division.
High praise for La Serna indeed. Obviously, the they are barely winning to get into a lower div. is ridiculous because they beat Edison. If you were trying to tank for a lower div. you wouldn’t beat Edison.
Besides, whether LS gets put in Div 4 or 5 or even 6, all those divisions are solid, not really much drop off until you get to D7 and then a huge drop off when you get to down to the Divisions the Santa Fe’s & El Rancho’s play in.
As a casual outside observer of area HS FB for a long time, I always knew La Serna had potential, but to become the Behemoth they have been for nearly the last 2 decades is rather remarkable. Gotta give them respect and coaches should talk to Beltran & George to see exactly how they made it happen.
The consistency is crazy, to play in HALF of the CIF-SS Title games since 2010 is nuts. I wonder how many CIF-SS Public HS FB programs can say that, and doing all of it in Div 6 or better?
La Serna has historically running clocked all their league opponents by the early 3rd quarter… not just Whittier but everyone! So what has changed? League hasn’t gotten any better but LS sure has gotten worse lmao.
Seriously LS is not trying to get in a lower division by keeping it close, they simply can’t win like they used to. Don’t give them too much credit guys.
Really looking forward to La Serna giving Sports Man a 100th Andy George Win t-shirt, such a big accomplishment when you pulverize the DRL every year… well except this year with wins only be determined by 15 points or so. They should really give Mustain his flowers more often… Dude has been keeping LS relevant this year more than Georgina has.
I’ll wait for Sports “know it all” man to chime in. Btw you know so long as no one is using their real name on here that you are essentially anonymous too, right? Post your name bro so we can see if you actually started on Varsity or whatever.
Damani Porras is the #1 WR in that class, max preps stats are available to everyone
@Watcher. If your conclusion about LS playoff success is evident to you , how much more so would it be to LS coaching staff??? What is the only way to impact divisional placement ? Limit victories over ER , SF and Cal to 15 point wins; these are games in which they are 30-40 point favorites!
Moreover, I hope people begin to realize that the quality of your team is measured by what division you are placed in and not success in gerrymandered CIF playoffs . Any D8 team would be the favorite to win D9, and big favorites outclassing D10 opponents ! It’s not like CIF just puts you there, they measure your success over the course of the year ; then in linear fashion they line up qualifiers and split the pie into 14 sections .
Hope everyone gets their favorite flavor
People keep bringing up the Edison game and saying they beat them and only get by ER, SF and cal by 2 scores. That Edison was special, they played up to their opponent. It happens, now with their injuries they’re trying to get healthy through league and into the playoffs. They sure aren’t the 2024 team not even last years team. If they expect to make a run it has to be D6, D4 it’s a first round exit and D5 maybe two wins.
Sportsman. You are the know it all on here. Give it a long rest.
i do not think i know much more than most, but i definitely think The cif committee has screwed up high school competition in football and when some of the worst clubs go far in the terrible divisions (beating teams like riverside school of the blind; kidding but close to truth) it is super not fair for good teams who can kill those terrible teams in d 13 or 14 ten out of ten times ; proof cif has no clue
Watcher? Long has almost 1600 passing yards with about 62% completion stats! So you know it all think the coach has misused him? Who else will be the starting qb? Tell us. he was excellent against edison , but that was only game i saw. i know you should be head coaching only the best clubs right? Did you ever start on even one varsity high school team. i suggest not
@Wounded Knee
Injuries have played a larger factor then normal for LS.
I’m not sure if the O-Line has had any injuries but counting all defensive players and all offensive skill position players, LS has only had 8 non O-Linemen play in all of their games.
Their is no conspiracy. This year was your chance to beat LS, next year they will be much better & in a new league.
The Cathedral Phantoms are rolling now. They have a Top QB Jaden Jefferson and The #1 Reciever in Calif Quinten Hail this might be their year.
The coach wins state last year and another person is definitely detached! But it is the know it all on here not the coach, ! I would not doubt it if he never started as a player on even on varsity team
@Anonymous
This recent strategy is designed to place them
At the top of D5 rather than the bottom of D4 and is pretty obvious to the savvy . The ER game was 14-0 after six minutes and ends up 17 point toned down game
The earth being round and not flat was a conspiracy theory at one time .
DRW? I know one definite thing! He was not ‘misused’ against Edison; he was great. D1? What about D2 you ‘self appointed know it all’? How many football players in this league have earned scholarships in any of the NCAA DIVISIONS in the last 10-15 years? I suggest we can count the total on one hand
Gratified: “why coveted D14?”
No breakaway D1 guy, ie Jake George, Owen Long, Kaimana Tufaga. They are deep but not at the previous talent level. D4 will not be good especially with that qb.
@Detached Observer
La Serna just isn’t as good as last year… they did get some guys back but seriously it isn’t a big conspiracy theory to get into a lower division. If they are in D4 they might win one game… D5 they might win two games… just let it all unfold.
@DRW …. I have to cal
BS on La Serna last three margin of victories vs ER , SF and lowly California: All games decided by 15 points!!!!!!
Please understand the CalPreps algorithm “ punishes” teams for each point beyond 15 in their margin of victory by improving their power rating and thus possibly moving them into higher divisions. This tactic just looks too obvious to the informed observer !
Come on , seriously …a 2touchdown win over Cal????? After beating Edison????
I guess that’s good coaching these days
After watching the big LS QB for 3 years I have determined he is misused by George. Clearly this year he is not surrounded by the same recuiting cast as last year. George should give him a number in the 30’s 0r 40’s and make him a linebacker and edge rusher. He would reek havoc.Any college coach will see he does not have the intangibles top D1 QB’s need like speed and a 6th sense for staying cool. But maybe coach is not allowed to coach in that way.
Chill man, I’m just trying to hype the game. Of course HS sports is important too, but it’s Saturday and we all like football, right?
@ Big Game
This focuses on high school football and their accomplishments and trials as many other outlets give ample time to college and professional sports. Give the high school kids their space.
So let me get this straight. The much loved BA team show up in week 8 with a 4 star transfer QB from who knows where and everything is great for the Amat fan base. How many hard working Amat players lost their poitions and playing time for this ringer. Whats next 3 300 pound offensive lineman show up next week or a 4.6 running back? This ain’t supposed to happen. Its almost playoff time and ringers showing up everywhere.
No high school game compares to the importance of tonight’s SC-Notre Dame meeting. This rivalry game is always interesting, but this year’s edition is carries the extra weight of playoff eligibility and Lincoln Riley’s approval rating. 4:30 (PDT) on NBC.
The Rise of the Titans schtick is old. Get a life dude.
Pioneer’s triumph over Glenn is a sign that the Titans are, once again, rising. If the team can go up just a bit more, it might be enough to get a spot in that coveted D14 bracket, and from there, zoom to the top. It’s a great day to be a Titan.
