(Montebello) – The Schurr Spartans crushed the visiting Alhambra Moors, 56-0, on Friday night to run their Almont League record to 3-0. The Spartans are now tied with the Bell Gardens Lancers for the league lead with two games left in the regular season.
Schurr running back Mateo Carrasco carried the ball 10 times for 194 yards and three touchdowns. His runs of 71 and 55 yards in the first quarter put the Spartans ahead, 14-0, and his 10-yard burst late in the second quarter gave them a 42-0 halftime lead.
Schurr’s freshman quarterback, Jacob Torres, connected on 10 of 12 passes for 185 yards and three TD’s. His leading target was wide receiver Caesar Aguila, who made four catches for 75 yards and two scores. Aguila also had an interception on defense.
The Spartans scored their last two touchdowns in the third quarter as the game proceeded with a running clock.
Schurr rolled up 452 yards from scrimmage, with 260 of those yards coming on the ground. Alhambra’s offense was virtually nonexistent in this game, as the Moors gained only 16 total yards and were held to a net of -16 yards rushing.
Alhambra quarterback Bryan Leonard hit on just five of 14 passes for 28 yards, and his backup, Robby Siegmeth, completed only one of eight throws for four yards and was intercepted twice. Running back Halen Tsang rushed seven times for a total of -1 yard.
The Spartans raised their overall record to 5-3, while the Moors, who are winless in league play, fell to 4-4.
