- Olympian Chloe Kim fell short in her bid to become the first snowboarder to win three consecutive gold medals as she finished second to Choi Gaon of South Korea in the women’s halfpipe Thursday at the Winter Olympics.
- The Philadelphia Phillies released outfielder Nick Castellanos Thursday after the team was unable to trade him.
- The Dodgers signed third baseman Max Muncy to a one-year extension for $10 million Thursday.
- The Detroit Tigers signed pitcher Justin Verlander to a one-year, $13 million contract.
- Servite has hired Rick Garretson as it new head football coach. Garretson is a Servite alum and was most recently the head coach at Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona.
- The Dodgers also signed Kike Hernandez to a one-year, $10 million deal.
- The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to hire Mike McCoy as the assistant head coach. McCoy served as the interim head coach for the Tennessee Titans last year when Brian Callahan was fired.
- Arcadia, Pasadena, St. Francis and Maranatha were all knocked out of the CIF Boys Basketball playoffs in the first round.

One thing that jumps right out at you about Servite’s new hire is that the guy is either 69 or 70 years old. We have to wonder if the man is physically up to the task of competing in the nation’s toughest league. Just because we have U.S. presidents pushing 80 doesn’t mean H.S. football programs should follow suit. Anyway, as long as they keep a defibrillator handy for good OLD Rick, it’s off to the races.
Pioneer basketball also faltered in the first round, despite all their regular season wins. Since Mr. Riser has made himself scarce on this development, I will be the one to congratulate the kids on their otherwise stellar season. Part of being an advocate for a sports program is to support them in good times and bad, so it’s instructive to see Riser cowering in the face of this 21-point first round spanking.
